You may be prepared to answer interview questions, but what should you ask your physician recruiter to make sure the job is the perfect fit?

Here are four questions to ask your recruiter before you sign any agreements:

1. What kind of experience do you have with my specialty?

A physician recruiter is a partner in your job search, which means you'll want someone who is dedicated and knowledgeable. When you ask this question, you'll want to learn about the recruiter's history with other professionals that share your specialty.

Medical Economics magazine cautioned physician job seekers against recruitment agencies that attempt to entice you with a perfect position only to try to convince you to take a less desirable role. Trust your instincts - if something feels off about the recruiter's intentions, don't be afraid to end the relationship.

2. Why is the position open?

Every organization experiences turnover, but a low employee retention rate could indicate problems with the group's management. Ask your recruiter about the position's history to learn how often it's been left vacant.

The last thing you want is to be hired only to find yourself in the unhappy situation of needing to look for work again in a year. In addition to questioning your recruiter about the job, perform your own due diligence by researching the organization online and using your personal network to learn as much you can.

3. What can you tell me about the organization's history?

This question is especially important if the organization or group was recently formed. You'll want to understand the organization's mission before you sign on as part of the team. By learning about when the group was founded and how it's grown since that time, you'll have a better picture of how the organization functions.

For example, if the group is relatively new, you may have the opportunity to shape its growth in the future. On the other hand, you may be expected to adapt to the entrenched culture of an organization with deep roots.

4. Will the organization help my spouse find work?

This question is very important to ask if you're moving to a new city or state with your family. Your spouse is an equal stakeholder in your move, and the recruiter should understand this. In fact, some organizations will help you find a suitable new home, and they may offer job placement assistance for your eligible family members.
