Healthcare Careers in 2021

The global pandemic of 2020 has changed the face of healthcare as we know it. Healthcare systems have been pushed to and beyond capacity.  When, where, and how medical professionals treat patients was one of the biggest stress points. On-the-fly adjustments and processes that were completely reimagined over the course of the past year will continue to exist for the time being and, perhaps, forever.   Successful healthcare careers need to take these changes into account to ensure long-term viability.

Here is where we think Healthcare will trend in 2021.

Telemedicine is here to stay.

Telemedicine and Telehealth, in general, have been around for some time.  This industry was expected to slowly grow over the next decade, but the pandemic accelerated that growth within a year. Many users have taken advantage of telemedicine services as the pandemic rages on not only for simple medical issues but also for severe conditions that normally would warrant in-person care. The number people using telehealth is still growing and will continue to do so until we move into a post-COVID-19 environment.

As demand grows and normalizes, the healthcare industry must conform to meet patients’ needs. With this increase in usage, the technology available will also have to improve to keep up.  This creates a need for medical personnel that not only knows how to use but improve medical technology.

Non-medical industries will need to take healthcare into account.

If there is one thing that the pandemic has taught us is that every business needs to develop measures that ensure the health of their employees. Some companies will need to rethink their processes and operations which include employee health screenings as well as mitigating the stresses that working during a pandemic bring. This includes adding on third-party vendors that provide medical services or the installation of in-house medical facilities where possible.

Retooling frontline workers needed to contain Covid-19 and guard against future pandemics.

Healthcare workers on the frontline have been hit hard during this pandemic so the need for more personnel will be prevalent next year and the year to follow.  New medical workers could be hired at a faster clip than we have seen in recent years to fill the void.  Given that the pandemic is not over, we will continue to see more and more patients in need of care.  So on-boarding processes that take a long time will have to be completely overhauled for more expedited means.

These are just a few trends in healthcare that the pandemic has directly influenced.  There are many more ways that the medical industry has been affected in the short term and permanently.  Healthcare will continue to evolve as Covid-19 continues.  However, we have learned a lot from this experience and continue to do so.  The things that the medical industry, non-medical industries, and private citizens have done and adapted to will serve all of us in the months to come.  In the post-pandemic world, we’ll be better equipped to handle any future pandemics from an infrastructure, resource, and mental health sense.
