Nationally recognized St. Luke's University Hospital is seeking highly motivated registered nurses to join our operating room team-positions available at multiple campuses.
The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) delivers nursing care for perioperative patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, develops, implements and evaluate a nursing plan of care. Works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the RN.
  • Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for the perioperative patient as addressed in the Hospital Policy and Procedure Manuals and in AORN Standards and Recommended Practices.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in aseptic technique.
  • Identifies needed supplies and equipment to prepare OR Suite for patient care. Inspect OR Suite to determine if it is clean and equipment is in readiness for the case.
  • Determines that the consent is on the chart and indicates the correct procedure. Determines that the patient is properly identified.
  • Initiates and maintains correct sponge, needle and instrument counts as identified in the OR Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Identifies and prepares the incision site according to established procedure. Anticipates and fulfills the needs of the surgical team.
  • Identifies, labels and sends specimens to pathology per established procedure.
  • Functions as a circulating nurse as it relates to opening sterile supplies, maintaining counts, implementing surgical asepsis, safety precautions and cost effectiveness.
  • Functions as a scrub nurse as it relates to scrubbing, gowning, gloving preparing instruments and suture and implementing surgical asepsis, safety precautions and cost-effectiveness.
  • Remains at the patient's side and assists the Anesthesiologist/CRNA as required during induction and emergence from anesthesia.
  • Coordinates a smooth transition from the intraoperative area to the post-operative area. Demonstrates flexibility to unit needs in relation to patient assignments, shift assignment, work schedule and on-call coverage.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 10 hours per day; 8 hours at a time. Walk up to 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 pounds. Occasionally lift, carry and push objects up to 75 pounds. Transport patients weighing up to 400 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher. Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must have the ability to move quickly. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision. Depth perception necessary. Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

MOST COMPLEX DUTIES ARE:

Using the nursing process to provide individualized, professional nursing care to patients. The nursing process is defined as the ongoing process of assessment, planning, implementations, coordination and evaluation of patient care.

COMMUNICATIONS:

Good written and verbal communication skills required for contacts with other departments, patients, families, the community and medical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the State of Pennsylvania or seek Pennsylvania licensure through reciprocity.

1 year experience in peri-op setting required.
