Position Summary:

The Nursing Shift Supervisor is a Nursing Leader who serves as a resource for problem solving, provides clinical expertise, facilitates staff mentoring and coaching, facilitates patient flow during the off shifts (typically, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays)

Key Responsibilities:

* Provides on site management of the hospital or long term care during the off shift, normally when hospital or long term care management is not on site
* Manages the delivery of patient care and manages any issues that arise
* Manages occurrences during the shift ensuring appropriate documentation
* Facilitates professional collaboration with all staff and providers
* Assists staff in clinical problem solving
* Rounds on patients and families with concerns or complaints
* Rounds on admitted patients in the Emergency Department
* Mentors and coaches staff in clinical and behavioral events
* Facilitates patient flow by assisting staff in decision making
* Collaborates with staff to provide considerate care that respects patient's personal values, beliefs, taking spiritual and cultural needs into account
* Supports patients and families participation in making informed decisions
* Reinforces Patients Rights, Collaborates with staff to assess patient's physical, psychological, and social status needs
* Reinforces policies and procedures
* Prioritizes multiple emergent situations
* Responds to codes
* Facilitates quality care through knowledge of and reinforcement with the staff, pertinent to regulatory issues
* Role models excellent communication by keeping Managers and Directors informed
* Seeks assistance appropriately from Directors of Nursing and/or Administrator on Call
* Interfaces with all departments during the off shifts and communicates with the appropriate leader in a timely collegial manner
* Functions as an inter and intra departmental liaison to enhance optimal patient care
* Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, staff, physicians
* Collaborates with staff to identify safety risks and takes appropriate action
* Acts as patient and staff advocate in Infection Control
* Allocates and reallocates human resources appropriately
* Maintains staffing patterns
* Ensures safe staffing with appropriate skill mix for all units for the current and on-coming shift; implements actions to address staffing needs for those shifts
* Provides guidance to unit staff in all matters related to resource availability, staffing, flexing, and floating staff
* Assigns coverage of Close Observation Technicians/Shift Based Floats
* Demonstrates fiscal responsibility
* Maintains all mandatory educational requirements
* Attends Off Shift Director meetings regularly attends Leadership Development Institutes
* Participates in professional organizations and/or health related activities in the community

Minimum Qualifications:

* Bachelor's degree in Nursing or higher (i.e. MSN) required OR

Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in nursing to be completed within 5 years of in the role AND must have a minimum of an Associate's degree in Nursing with 3 years of work experienc
Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

* Current New York State Registered Nurse License
* Effective 1/1/2014, BLS required for all new candidates prior to hire
* BLS required for all internal team members by 12/31/2014
