Position Overview: Registered Nurse positions have various job responsibilities and functions within this agency. Depending on the assignment, the RN works in an Inpatient, Outpatient, or Residential Treatment Program in a correctional facility or as part of the Corrections Mental Health Program. The employee may be hired for a specific area and assigned to any or all ambulatory or inpatient settings within the complex or facility.

Registered Nurse P11 ($24.93-$32.95/hr) is an experienced-level nurse performing a broad range of nursing duties. No specific experience is required.

Registered Nurse 12 ($26.86-$35.35/hr) functions as a senior worker or as an emergency/clinic nursing services specialist. One year of experience as an RN is required; or, a master's or bachelor's degree in nursing and six months of experience as an RN.

JOB DUTIES:

• Provides direct patient care independently on all units of the Health Center

• Initiates and sustains lifesaving care and measures as appropriate, as well as performs the full range of clinical nursing duties

• Exercises considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action due to the complexity of the work exceeding written, established methods and procedures often available

• Daily contact with prisoners whose security levels will range from minimum to maximum

Duties of senior-level positions may include:

Duane Waters Health Care Facility - This is a senior Registered Nurse position that requires advanced clinical decision-making skills and judgment. The senior-level RN is a member of the interdisciplinary health care team. He/she provides direct patient care independently on all units of the hospital. The senior-level RN is expected to initiate and sustain lifesaving care and measures as appropriate, as well as perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. The complexity of the work exceeds written, established methods and procedures often available and, therefore, the senior-level RN is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action. The RN 12 functions with minimal supervision in the provision of total patient care on the inpatient units. He/she will function as "Charge Nurse" in the absence of the RN Manager 12 or RN Manager 13. The job requires daily contact with prisoners whose security levels will range from minimum to maximum. This position is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Ambulatory Care, Prison Facility - This is a senior Registered Nurse position that requires advanced clinical decision-making skills and judgment. The senior-level RN is the first, and sometimes only, health care professional to assess and/or treat correctional prisoners. It is the senior-level RN who determines the need for and timeliness of an appropriate referral to the physician or other provider. He/she is the only health care professional expected to independently perform the full range of their duties in any setting, including housing units, camps, transport vehicles, ambulances, etc. In any and all settings, the senior-level RN is expected to initiate and sustain lifesaving care and measures as appropriate, as well as perform the full range of clinical nursing duties. The complexity of the work exceeds written, established methods and procedures often available, and therefore the senior-level RN nurse is expected to exercise considerable independent judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action. The nurse at this level works as an emergency clinic nurse, an inpatient staff nurse, a mental health nurse or as an ambulatory clinic nurse. The employee may be hired for a specific area and assigned to any or all ambulatory or inpatient settings within the complex or facility.

Positions are subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

These positions provide a steppingstone for advancement into supervisory positions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education

Possession of a diploma, associate, bachelor's or master's degree in nursing accepted for licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Experience

Registered Nurse P11 - No specific type or amount is required

Registered Nurse 12 - One year of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse

Alternate Education (RN 12 Only)

Possession of a master's degree in nursing or possession of a bachelor's degree in nursing and six months of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse P11 may be substituted for the experience requirement.

HIRING BONUS

PLEASE NOTE: Some facilities are eligible for a one-time signing bonus of $5,000. The bonus will be paid out as a $1,500 gross pay adjustment on the employee's first pay warrant and the remaining $3,500 will be paid upon completion of one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The Department of Corrections may screen out job applicants who have been convicted of a felony in accordance with Public Act 191 of 2017. Applicants who have been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony are ineligible for employment with the Department of Corrections until satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including parole or probation.
