Palliative Medicine Specialist

We are seeking outstanding and experienced palliative medicine specialists to join our progressive team of Palliative Medicine Specialists. We currently have part-time and full time vacancies and are flexible on how we recruit to these roles.

About the service:

 The Waikato Palliative Care Program, currently accredited with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, encompasses two sites; Waikato Hospital and Hospice Waikato, providing specialist palliative care across the Waikato Region.  It is an exciting time for the service as it is about to undergo transformation in the way it works.  We are looking for a candidate keen to help us implement the recommendations of the recent DHB wide palliative care review. The Palliative Care department currently reports within the Division of Oncology. A consult liaison service is provided by medical and nursing specialists to patients with both malignant and non-malignant diagnoses. A small number of patients are admitted under the Palliative Care service each year with complex palliative care needs or as transfers from other DHBs to access tertiary level Palliative Care input.

Hospice Waikato is the main community palliative care provider to the region comprising a 10-bed inpatient unit along with Rainbow Place, NZ’s only specialist Children’s Hospice facility. Hospice Waikato also provides an at home service, a rural outreach programme, plus outpatient clinics. Patients and family/whanau of Hospice have access to a full range of psychosocial and spiritual support through illness and bereavement.  

The SMO will spend quality time on both sites. The program has a close relationship with the University of Auckland’s Waikato Clinical School and an Honorary appointment at an appropriate University level (Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor) can be arranged depending on the applicant’s experience and academic qualifications. There is a requirement for Vocational registration or the potential vocational registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand.

The successful applicant will be employed by Waikato DHB as a Senior Medical Officer with generous vacation and CME leave. Stipends are provided for conference leave as well as relocation expenses.
