Purpose of Position:

Under direction of the director of Nursing, with the broadest scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, is responsible for the direction, coordination and control of the functional activities of the Nursing Department in a large hospital, hospital center or diagnostic and treatment center. Serves as the principal assistant to the Director of Nursing. Assumes full responsibility and authority in the Director's absence. Performs related work.

Examples of Typical Tasks:

1. Serves as Head of the Department of Nursing in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
2. Directs, coordinates and controls the execution, implementation and revision of departmental policies and procedures to assure attainment of goals and objectives established by the Nursing Department.
3. Develops and implements an organizational plan that delineates nursing functions, defines nursing departmental relationships with other hospital departments, and identifies positions required to carry out functional responsibilities and nursing staffing patterns that insure the maintenance of an adequate and professionally qualified staff.
4. Interprets policies and objectives of nursing services to staff and community groups. Promotes harmonious working relationships with other hospital departments and
community agencies.
5. Directs the design, development and implementation of nursing care standards to provide a systematic review of quality of nursing services being delivered.
6. Monitors progress of special nursing programs and projects and makes recommendations and/or takes appropriate action on basis of findings.
7. Keeps abreast of current nursing technology and professional techniques and disseminates latest developments in the field to all nursing personnel.
8. Directs, designs, implements and monitors a self-evaluation nursing department program to insure compliance with accreditation standards imposed by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and N.Y.S. regulatory agencies.
