The Sprott Department of Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at University Health Network (UHN) are conducting a search for the Division Head of Cardiovascular Surgery and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre Chair in Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics at UHN.   These appointments are for a five-year term, renewable once, following a successful review.  The division head appointment is a full-time faculty position at the level of Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Toronto and will be based at University Health Network.   The effective date of these appointments are flexible; however, we hope to have this search completed by November 1st, 2021.   The Division Head would oversee the administration activities of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, with responsibilities for clinical and academic activities including excellence in patient care, teaching of medical students, residents and fellows, research, innovation, recruitment, and related service duties.  Financial management and assurance of quality of care in the division are core components of this position.  While the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at UHN manages the full spectrum of patients with cardiovascular disease, we have a specific focus on the management of patients with valvular heart disease, complex aortic disease, adult congenital heart disease and mechanical circulatory support, and are expanding our minimally invasive cardiac surgery program.

Qualifications include a MD with specialist certification in cardiovascular surgery and eligibility for licensure in the Province of Ontario.  Candidates must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.   The successful candidate will possess strong leadership skills encompassing integrative thinking and managerial tools, emotional and political intelligence evidenced by a strong track record.   Leadership training is an asset; however, not a mandatory requirement.   Compensation is primarily fee for service and will be approximately $800,000 (CDN). Additional compensation may be provided commensurate with qualifications and experience.

University Health Network is comprised of the Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute and the Michener Institute of Education.  UHN is an academic institution affiliated with the University of Toronto and is recognized internationally for excellence in patient care, research, innovation and education with strong values of safety, compassion, teamwork, integrity and stewardship.    The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is comprised of 9 full-time clinical faculty offering integrated, collaborative, multi-disciplinary approaches between medical specialties to manage the full spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, both standard and advanced cases.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.   University Health Network and the University of Toronto are strongly committed to diversity, equity and inclusion  within their communities and especially welcome applications from visible minority group members, women, Aboriginal persons and persons with disabilities, members of sexual minority groups, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
