The Icahn School of Medicine at the Mount Sinai Health System is seeking an experienced, academically-oriented colon and rectal surgeon for the position of Health System Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualities:

• Have a successful background in advancing colon and rectal surgery programs from administrative, research, education, and patient care perspectives
• Have a track record of working collaboratively with clinical, research, and educational colleagues in both leadership and non-leadership roles across multiple disciplines
• Have a strong background in managing and mentoring trainees and junior faculty
• Have a track record of significant publications and extramural grant funding
• Possess a thorough understanding and passion for education and training programs
• Possess a thorough understanding of clinical trials operations
• Hold a medical license in New York State
• Hold a current academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor

The successful candidate will have overall administrative, clinical, teaching, research responsibility for the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery within the Mount Sinai Health System which consists of eight main teaching hospitals and multiple off-site practice locations. This role will oversee the one-year Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at The Mount Sinai Hospital. The main priorities and specific responsibilities are as follows:

Administrative/Financial

• Recommend, develop, implement and update strategic long- and short-range plans to grow and expand the overall volume and service offerings within the System Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. This includes working closely with department administration to develop appropriate business plans and projections related to services within the Division.
• Ensure that the Division is fiscally sound and work to enhance overall revenue of the Division. This will include monitoring financial reports issued by the Department of Surgery in comparison to the budgeted targets set by the Department and/or Institution.
• Assist in the recruitment and retention of faculty within the Division.
• Create a physician leadership plan to identify, develop and mentor future physician leaders across the Division and the Department of Surgery.
• Develop a strong working relationship with all full-time and voluntary members of the Division; monitor and implement plans that improve physician satisfaction.
• Recommend clinical privileges for physicians with appointments in the Division (to be processed through established medical staff channels).
• Develop and implement physician communication strategies that inform, link and bond Division physicians among themselves and with other Mount Sinai physicians, including forums that promote information exchange, collective purpose and socialization.
• Delegate authority and responsibility to Division team members; develop improved management techniques and practices.
• Assist the Division, Department and Institution in acquiring additional philanthropy to further support each and all of the aforementioned entities.
• Work closely with members of other Departments and/or Divisions to develop collaborative initiatives related to colorectal surgery. This would be at the direction of the Chairman of the Department of Surgery.
• Serve on committees and/or task forces as assigned by the Chairman of the Department of Surgery.

Clinical/Quality

• Perform advanced-level surgical procedures as they relate to the treatment of patients with colorectal conditions; identify and implement advanced or new surgical therapies related to the field of colorectal surgery.
• Serve as the Vice Chair for Outpatient Services for the Division, ensuring all outpatient activity is functioning at optimal levels and physician needs are being met, and patient satisfaction scores are at their highest levels.
• Develop a robust clinical practice of one’s own by recruiting new and former patients and referrers to the practice.
• Work with marketing and operations teams to foster relationships with internal and external sources to build, maintain and grow your clinical practice. Monitor access to clinical services and work with appropriate leaders to remove barriers and facilitate referrals and patient flow to all faculty members in the Division.
• Ensure that the quality and appropriateness of surgical care are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate action based on findings is taken when necessary. Ensure that all patients undergoing colorectal surgery at Mount Sinai receive a comparable standard of care regardless of the setting in which the care is delivered.
• Develop quality targets for the Division; monitor the quality and appropriateness of colorectal surgical care when rendered by physicians in the Division or in Department of Surgery training and education programs.
• Recommend and develop policies and procedures that encompass patient care, patient safety, etc. in compliance with accepted standards, regulatory agencies governing health care delivery and the guidelines/rules or accrediting bodies.
• Monitor patient satisfaction reports and results and develop plans by which Division physicians can contribute to improvement of patient satisfaction with clinical services in all Mount Sinai’s health care facilities.

Education

Direct the activities of the Division’s Residency and Fellowship Training Programs to fulfill all requirements for fully accredited programs and support a positive educational experience.

• Personally oversee and ensure that Department of Surgery residents and medical students are utilizing and benefitting from the Division’s training programs in order to advance their training and careers.
• Establish a program of continuing education for all individuals who have clinical privileges in the Division. The program shall include educational conferences, morbidity and mortality conferences, and in-service training, and be based in part on how the results of the evaluation or surgical care.

Research

• Assist in obtaining NIH and related grant funding for the Division.
• Help to cultivate, develop and continue participating in research aspects related to colorectal surgery. This includes helping junior faculty and staff develop, obtain and participate in research projects themselves, and also personally contributing to the Division’s research efforts through personal projects and grant sourcing.
• Work with leaders of clinical research and clinical measurement and information systems to position Mount Sinai as a leader in integrating measures of clinical quality, patient and physician satisfaction, and finance.
