Job Description

Under direction of the Senior Assistant Vice President for Simulation in collaboration CNE, with the broadest scope for the exercise of independent initiative and judgment, The Director of Nursing - Simulation organizes, directs, coordinates and evaluates the nursing service and nursing education programs of a health care setting or diagnostic and treatment center; performs related tasks.

To build simulation programs for NYC Health+ Hospitals nurses in response to system needs as directed by the Senior Vice President of Simulation, and in collaboration with the CNE. Simulation is a powerful tool to improve nursing system processes, assess quality of established and new processes (e.g. secret shoppers), improve teamwork and communication skills (algorithms for briefings and debriefings) and improve clinical procedural skills (e.g. CVL line maintenance and urinary catheter insertion). Ubiquitous deployment of simulation experiences will empower nurses to practice technical and behavioral skills to enhance the safety and quality of health care delivered by NYC Health+ Hospital facilities.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
  1. Work closely with the system CNO to respond to system needs by deploying simulation as a key quality improvement method.
  2. Measure the outcome of all simulation program
  3. Accountable to the NYC Health+ Hospitals Division of Medical and Professional Affairs and the Office of Patient Centered Care for achievement of the NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center mission, vision and goals; compliance with relevant law, NYC Health+ Hospitals policy, educational standards, and clinical standards.
  4. Work collaboratively with the CNE, nurse educators and stakeholders to develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate simulation-based education and events.
  5. Participate in event and scenario planning meetings to provide curriculum, scenario development and learning objective expertise to meet nursing scenario development needs.
  6. Collaborate with nurse educators, faculty and stakeholders to achieve consistent, integrated application of simulation-based education and research, aligned to the mission and strategic priorities of NYC Health+ Hospitals
  7. Collaborate in the development, delivery, evaluation and improvement of all NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center instructional programs and services.
  8. Working with nurse leaders to assist facilities to identify learning needs, and plan simulation learning activities to meet those needs.
  9. Actively facilitate in the one-year simulation fellowship program and serve as a mentor for nursing candidates. Provide guidance on simulation fellowship content and educational delivery from the nursing perspective.
  10. Establish and lead the NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Council of Nursing
  11. Active member of the Simulation Center Advisory Council
  12. Active member of the Satellite Simulation Center Advisory Councils.
  13. Understands healthcare simulation research and actively promotes nursing participation in the Simulation Research program
  14. Adheres to and assists in development of NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center policies, procedures and practice standards that are consistent with the NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center mission and with highest quality industry practice.
  15. Collaborates with key NYC Health+ Hospitals Central Office and facility staff to identify areas of program need for nursing, using risk management data, quality and safety indicators, root causes, and infection data, in order to inform course priority and development.
  16. Identifies opportunities to integrate simulation technology into NYC Health+ Hospitals patient safety and quality of care initiatives and facilitates such integration.
  17. Meets with stakeholders to review outcomes and make any necessary adjustments.
  18. Identifies and assesses business opportunities and areas for growth for simulation nursing programs.
  19. Develops and implements strategies to maximize participation of target learners including, among others, the provision of continuing professional education credits (CNE) for NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center course nursing participants wherever possible.
  20. Coordinates with other services/departments, such as Quality and Performance Improvement, to ensure congruence of training with the corporate mission.
  21. Collaborates with NYC Health+ Hospitals Simulation Center Director of Operations, Clinical Simulation Staff and NYC Health+ Hospitals Chief Nursing Officer, to develop interdisciplinary programs focused on improving teamwork and communication skills for nurses.
Minimum Qualifications

1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State; and,
2. A Master's Degree in Nursing Administration or an equivalent field, and a minimum of four years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three years of which shall have been in a hospital; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State.

  • Experience in delivery of simulation education (Certified Healthcare Simulation Education (CHSE), certification)
  • (4) years of high-level responsible experience in nursing administration, three (3) years of which must have been in a hospital

KNOWLEDGEABLE IN:
  • Knowledge of simulation services, technologies and applications.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of adult education, educational theory and instructional technology.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software applications relevant to simulator functions.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, medicine and the healthcare setting.
  • Experience in the delivery of clinical education.
