Where you’ll be working: Specialist Intensivist – Critical Care Department

The details: Permanent – Full time, 40 hours per week (1 FTE), rostered (if applicable)

The Critical Care unit at Waikato Hospital is on a considerable growth path to reform the services and expand the number of ICU level beds that are provided by the Critical Care unit.  As a result we are in the market for a minimum of 6 SMOs, 2 Fellows and 22.5 ICU nurses.  This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a team working to revitalise the Waikato Critical Care unit.

About the service:

The Critical Care Department at Waikato Hospital is the tertiary provider for Intensive Care to the Midland region of New Zealand.  The Waikato ICU is a state of the art, 16-bed facility providing all major tertiary services including a major trauma centre and the second largest cardiac surgical centre in New Zealand. We provide neurosurgical and regional burns care in addition to a busy general and paediatric intensive care catering to the needs of 1500 ICU patients and almost 3000 HDU level patients each year. We operate a retrieval service by both air and road for critical care patients and a large contingency of cardiac patients.   We now prepare to expand the Intensive Care and seek to further develop academic and research interests, in addition to further advance training of Junior and Senior medical staff. In accordance with the level of service provided, the unit is credentialed by the College of Critical Care Medicine at level C24.

Required skills & experience:

  • Hold current registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand in the scope of practice of Intensive Care Medicine, or equivalent, and must be of good standing.
  • Both single and dual trained specialists are encouraged to apply. Those with Subspeciality interests including  cardiac, paediatric, research and academia will be supported
  • Employment in this role will only be confirmed once the applicant has been successfully credentialed by the relevant committee of the Waikato District Health Board.

Why us:

The Waikato District Health Board (DHB) is one of the largest of 20 DHBs in New Zealand.

We plan, fund and provide health and disability support services to a population of more than 400,000. We run five hospitals across the district – a tertiary hospital in Hamilton, a secondary hospital in Thames, and three rural hospitals in Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, and Tokoroa. We provide tertiary services for a population of over 800 000 people of the Midland reigion which includes Tauranga, Rotorua, Whakatane, Gisborne and Taranki Hospitals.

Waikato Hospital in Hamilton is one of New Zealand’s largest tertiary, teaching hospitals with over 600 inpatient beds and 22 operating theatres. Clinical specialities include Women’s and Children Services, Cardiology / Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oncology and Haematology, Surgical services, and Mental Health and Addiction. To do this we are working hard to develop a robust and capable workforce that reflects the population we serve. We strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds with the necessary capability and who share our values to apply and would greatly value seeing more applicants from our Māori communities.
