The Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute is in search of a dynamic board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon to join the Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  The Johns Hopkins Hospital was founded in 1889 and is the teaching hospital for The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The Johns Hopkins Hospital was ranked No. 4 in the United States and No. 1 in the state of Maryland according to the U.S. News and World Report’s best hospital rankings.

Cardiac surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital has a distinguished history of advancements in the treatment of cardiothoracic diseases in adults and children beginning with the Blalock-Taussig shunt in 1944. Our program provides a full complement of cardiothoracic surgical interventions. We also offer comprehensive treatment for heart and pulmonary failure, including ECMO, cardiac transplantation, lung transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support devices.

Aortic Surgery

The selected individual will serve as the cardiac surgery lead for the Broccoli Center for Aortic Diseases at Johns Hopkins, one of only a few centers in the world that provides comprehensive management and surgical repair of aortic diseases, having particular expertise with patients suffering from Marfan syndrome and Loeys-Dietz syndrome.

This appointee will hold a faculty appointment in the Division of Cardiac Surgery encompassed within the JHU Department of Surgery and will report to the Academic Division Chief, Surgical Lead and Co-Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute, and to the other senior leaders of both The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

The ideal candidate will have broad experience in adult cardiac surgery with recognized expertise and a track record of exemplary clinical results in the field of aortic surgery.  Expertise in endovascular aortic therapies as well as complex open surgery of the thoracic aorta is mandatory.  Faculty will have the privilege and responsibility of helping to teach cardiac surgery trainees and medical students, and will expand their research and scholarly activities to achieve national and international recognition as they advance the field.  Faculty within the Division of Cardiac Surgery have access to a robust research infrastructure related to bench and large animal research, clinical trial and data analytics to allow the development of their academic and research portfolio. 

Heart Transplantation

The ideal candidate for this position will have broad experience in adult cardiac transplantation with a track record of exemplary clinical results.  The applicant will divide his or her time between heart and transplantation and mechanical circulatory support and all facets of adult cardiac surgery. Experience in all facets of heart and lung transplantation, ventricular assist device implantation and ECMO is desirable.

Faculty will have the privilege and responsibility of helping to teach cardiac surgery trainees and medical students, and will expand their research and scholarly activities to achieve national and international recognition as they advance the field.  Faculty within the Division of Cardiac Surgery have access to a robust research infrastructure related to bench and large animal research, clinical trial and data analytics to allow the development of their academic and research portfolio. 

This individual will serve an integral part of the Comprehensive Transplant Center at Johns Hopkins, Johns Hopkins is nationally ranked among the top hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery by U.S. News & World Report. While we average 20+ heart transplant operations a year, we also focus on stabilization of patients as they await transplantation and options for patients who are not transplant candidates.

This appointee will hold a faculty appointment in the Division of Cardiac Surgery encompassed within the JHU Department of Surgery and will report to the Director of Heart Transplantation, Academic Division Chief, Surgical Lead and Co-Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute, and to the other senior leaders of both The Johns Hopkins University and The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Qualifications

MD, DO, or equivalent degree from an accredited school of medicine is required. Additionally, candidates must be fellowship trained, board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and eligible for licensure in Maryland.
