The Department of Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking applications for Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery. This position may include nomination for the Herbert E. Coe Endowed Chair of Pediatric Surgery depending on the candidate’s qualifications. This unique opportunity consists of a full-time UW faculty position at the rank of Professor WOT (without tenure by reason of funding) providing pediatric general surgery care and leadership primarily at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Seattle Children’s includes the Hospital, Research Institute and Foundation, and is the premier children’s health care facility in the Pacific Northwest and WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). Seattle Children’s is a 330 bed children’s health care facility with 18 inpatient and outpatient operating rooms and in the process of building both increased inpatient bed and OR capacity. UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.
The main responsibilities for this position include leading a Division of 14 pediatric surgeons who direct multiple broad reaching multi-disciplinary destination programs, and who are supported by dedicated nurse practitioners and nursing staff. In addition, responsibilities include financial stewardship of the Division which is currently the largest surgical contributor to the hospital’s finances. Responsibilities also include maintaining a clinical practice in pediatric general surgery while developing pediatric surgical service lines; participating in the education of surgical residents, medical students, and pediatric surgical fellows; furthering the research vision for the division; and providing academic and clinical leadership to division faculty and pediatric surgery stakeholders.
A successful candidate must have demonstrated expertise in pediatric general surgery, an MD (or foreign equivalent) and be board certified (or foreign equivalent) in general surgery. Candidates must also have completed an accredited pediatric surgery fellowship and be certified by the American Board of Surgery (or foreign equivalent) in pediatric surgery. The successful candidate will have prior expertise in leadership, including financial stewardship. Salary is commensurate with training, qualifications, and experience. This position will have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1 – June 30) with an anticipated start date in Spring/Summer 2022.
In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
