JOB DESCRIPTION:Performs assigned patient care and observation duties under the direction of a Registered Nurse or LPN. Prepares room to receive patient by setting up necessary equipment and ensuring neatness and cleanliness of room.Transports and collects patient specimens throughout hospital, and contributes to the completion of admission, discharge, transfer and postmortem care and forms.Utilizes appropriate technology to complete processes; i.e. Conversant.Communicates with patients and all members of the nursing team to relay appropriate information and provide patient care.Reinforces patient and family teaching.As part of a patient focused service, promotes supportive and healing environment so that customer and staff satisfaction is enhanced.Assists in emergency situations as directed by the RN/LPN.Performs vital signs and intake and output and records information.Takes and records blood glucose results.Reports observations and significant and unusual information regarding patients to RN/LPN.Observes color, consistency, amount and odor from drainage tubes; records information and notifies Registered Nurse of findings.Assists RN/LPN in providing patient care according to individual needs by observing IV site appearance, assisting with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination, hygiene, performing pre-and -post-operative procedural care, and assisting with respiratory functions/procedures.Ensures that prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort and rest are provided.Reports significant observations of the patient, monitor, and environment to the Registered Nurse according to defined procedures.Records telemetry findings.Enters all patient data in the PACU log book.Assemble incoming patient charts in the proper order, checking to see that all forms are accurately filled out by the physician, and that appropriate forms are sent with the patient upon transfer.Keep adequate stock of office supplies available.Participates in shift report as required.Promptly and courteously responds to patient requests via the intercom system.Relays appropriate information to the appropriate staff for immediate attention.Assists in the use of bag-valve-mask device, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, emergency cart and bedside glucose monitoring machine.Operates converter chair, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometer, sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeter, and computer.Observes and evaluates continuous EKG monitoring.Maintains telemetry equipment and supplies.Complies with Standard Precautions guidelines and all other Infection Control procedures and safety standards to maintain and promote a clean and healthy work environment.Participates in the orientation of new, temporary, and float Nursing Technician I's to the unit.Maintains hospital and unit-specific competencies as required.Participates in unit-based and system-wide Performance Improvement Program.Supports cost efficient/effective delivery of care.Serves as a resource/model through compliance with standards of care and with Department of Nursing, Hospital and organizational policies and procedures.May participate with research projects impacting patient care areas.Enters and retrieves data related to patient charges and supply orders to include daily reconciliation of patient charges to ensure accurate patient billing process.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A high school diploma or equivalent.One year of experience in a direct patient care related function or certification by the State of Georgia as a Certified Nursing Assistant or currently enrolled in an accredited Registered Nurse program and have completed two clinical semesters.BLS required.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Medium-Heavy) 36-75 lbs, 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 20-35 lbs, 34-66% of the workday; (frequently); 10-20 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 75 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 35 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking; Occasional sitting; Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing); Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock; Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting; Patient care/handling injuries; Radiation; Shift work; Travel may be required; Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators; environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
