Position Overview: We are a busy 15-provider multidisciplinary ophthalmology practice with three office locations in Northern Virginia (Falls Church, Fairfax, and Alexandria). We are seeking to add a new ophthalmic technician to our team. The Ophthalmic Technician is an allied health professional who works closely with our physicians to perform day-to-day clinical activities. The Ophthalmic Technician is primarily responsible for triaging, taking accurate histories, assisting with prepping for in-office procedures, and handling incoming clinical requests from patients, pharmacies, and other providers.

Common Job Duties:
  • Complete and submit Prior Authorization requests in a timely manner
  • Complete appointment follow-up items, such as prescription refills, e-prescribing requests, etc..., as requested by our physicians
  • Conduct special studies testing for patients as needed, including visual fields, OCTs, fundus photos, etc.
  • Ensure exam rooms are properly stocked with supplies and patient forms
  • Handle prescription requests from pharmacies and patients in a timely manner
  • Perform refractions
  • Prepare patients for examination by performing dilation, special testing, etc...
  • Prepare rooms for minor procedures and assist physicians with those procedures, as requested
  • Process medical record release requests
  • Record thorough medical histories, including medication and allergy histories
  • Record thorough complaint lists
  • Respond to patient inquiries from phone calls, messages, and/or our Patient Portal in a timely manner
  • Triage complex patient calls or in-person visits regarding eye problems
  • Other duties, as assigned

Additional Optometric-Specific Duties
  • Submit patient contact lens orders to vendors
  • Verify patient contact lens orders against chart notes
  • Other duties, as assigned

Additional Pediatric-Specific Duties
  • Monitor and track all Retinopathy of Prematurity office visits
  • Other duties, as assigned


Technical and Other Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience working as an Ophthalmic Technician
  • At least one year of experience with refractometry
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Be willing to travel to multiple office locations throughout a given day / week
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Ability to prioritize workload
  • Ability to work at a moderate-to-fast pace
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Records software
  • Familiarity with Practice Management software
  • Great organization skills
