The UT Southwestern Medical Center Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management seeks an outstanding leader in clinical and academic anesthesiology to become its next Division Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology.

The 2021‐2022 U.S. News & World Report Hospital Rankings place UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Cardiology and Heart Surgery programs at 11th Nationally. UT Southwestern performs a full range of cutting edge cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries and interventional procedures. North Texas is growing rapidly, and UT Southwestern has expanded successfully to accommodate increased need for excellent tertiary and quaternary medical care.

Faculty and trainees within UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology provide the highest quality clinical care to a wide variety of patients with cardiac, thoracic, and vascular disease. The Division’s faculty provide clinical patient care and corresponding clinical education of medical students, residents, and fellows at both Clements University Hospital and at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Division’s faculty members represent UT Southwestern as education organizers, speakers/panelists, committee members, editors, and elected leaders with national and international professional medical societies. Several faculty members within the Division are also conducting high-quality research with funding from NIH grants. UT Southwestern’s Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology presently consists of 18 clinical faculty anesthesiologists. Five of these faculty are also members of the Department’s Critical Care Division, one is also a member of the Obstetric Anesthesia Division, and one is a member of the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Division at Children’s Medical Center. The Division has a highly quality ACGME approved Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship that is in good standing and which will train three fellows in the 2022-2023 academic year.

Candidates for UT Southwestern’s Division Chief of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesiology will have successful track records in leadership and excellence in clinical medicine, medical education, and research. Fellowship training in adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology and National Board of Echocardiography certification in advanced perioperative transesophageal echocardiography are required. Applicants must have or be able to obtain a Texas medical license prior to employment and must be BC/BE with the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Ensuring ongoing excellent clinical care of patients undergoing cardiovascular and thoracic surgeries and interventional procedures, both in personal clinical practice and in supervision of the clinical care provided by the overall Division.

Providing strong mentorship and support for continued quality and growth of the academic activities of the Division’s faculty.

Promoting high quality clinical education of medical students, anesthesiology residents, and clinical adult

cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows participating in the Division’s clinical rotations.

Fostering local, national, and international professional leadership by the Division’s faculty.

Developing collaborations between the Division’s faculty and members of other medical specialties, to foster high quality multidisciplinary clinical and research approaches to clinical problems.
