The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veteran Health Administration (VHA), National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS), located in Ann Arbor, Michigan is soliciting applications for the position of Patient Safety Physician. NCPS develops, leads, and oversees activities and programs that drive the improvement of patient safety throughout the VHA. NCPS improves the safety and quality of care provided to VA beneficiaries in the VHA through innovation, publications, outcomes measurement, change management, systems learning and design, and fostering a just and safe culture.

The Patient Safety Physician works as part of multi‐disciplinary teams and is involved in varied projects, programs, and initiatives.  Works collaboratively with the Clinical Training Programs team on all operational aspects of the CTT and Lessons Learned programs including development of program content and educational tools critical to its conduct; communication with leaders from prospective new VA Medical Center enrollees; facilitating Learning Sessions in the VA facilities; and follow‐up and consultation with participating medical centers. The Patient Safety Physician must be adept in public speaking and will be expected to independently lead sessions in the CTT and Lessons Learned programs. The Patient Safety Physician or focuses upon using instructional design methods to develop and deliver an extensive educational portfolio for NCPS. This includes application to the fellows, chief residents, and faculty of the AFPS, the CRQS, and other similar training programs. In this capacity the Patient Safety Physician works collaboratively with others to:

  • Perform formal educational problem identification, with general and targeted needs assessments.
  • Define goals and specific educational measurable objectives.
  • Design and implement effective educational strategies that engage the learner using adult learning principles including delivery of virtual didactics, in‐person workshops, multi‐day face‐to‐face “bootcamps”, and other large educational conference sessions.
  • Formal assessment and evaluation of the effectiveness and impact of all educational activities including formative and summative qualitative survey review, quotative program metrics review, and delivery of such content to key stakeholders.
  • Engage in scholarly activities related to patient safety and education including implementing educational best practices and staying apprised of medical education literature.
  • Participate in the day-to-day mentorship of patient safety fellows and residents through either on‐site direct interaction or through virtual meetings.

The Patient Safety Physician may perform patient care in his/her area of clinical specialty on a non‐interference basis at a VA Medical Center to allow for enhanced insight regarding various operationally‐based patient safety issues.

Preferred Candidate:

  • Formal training in patient safety and/or quality improvement. A degree in healthcare patient safety or quality improvement‐related discipline (e.g., MPH or MS in Patient Safety) is desired, but not a requirement. Similarly, advanced degrees related to education are preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and techniques of adult learning, curriculum design, evaluation, and continuing education.
  • Extensive knowledge of patient safety and quality improvement. Experience in teaching health care providers in a variety of settings including lectures and small groups.
  • Evidenced a high degree of leadership, motivation, self‐direction, and initiative in patient safety improvement and interest in performance improvement in relation to reducing risk in clinical activities and programs.
  • Prior faculty appointments or other academic experiences enabling direct supervision of medical students and residents.

Basic Qualifications:

  • United States Citizenship
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any U.S. State, Commonwealth, Territory, or the District of Columbia
  • Board certified or board eligible physician
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
