Description:
The Registered Nurse is responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. The Registered Nurse functions within the limits of the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, St. Luke'sHospital and Patient Care Services policies and practice guidelines, and performs in a comparable manner to peers with similar training, experience and circumstances.

Priniciple Accountabilities:

1. Assesses the physiological health status of the patient including, but not limited to, proper patient identification and operative procedure verification. Performs Initial Patient Assessment. Alerts appropriate team member(s) or physicians as necessary regarding deviations from norm with respect to the physiological health status of the patient, changes in laboratory and diagnostic testing as well as vital signs. Maintains awareness of changes in patients conditions and reports appropriately. Recognizes medical-surgical risk factors.2. Provides preoperative nursing care for same day admit patients, observation patients and outpatients for the Operating Room, Cardiac Cath Lab, and other areas as needed.3. Assists surgeon and anesthesia personnel with preoperative facilitation of the patient for surgery. Communicates with Operating Room personnel regarding surgery schedule status, patient condition and via the OR tracking board, the patients readiness for surery.4. Inserts intravenous infusion catheters, calculates intravenous infusions and administers intravenous push medications. Assists anesthesia personnel with preoperative and postoperative procedures. 5. Provides preoperative care and postoperative care for patients who have received general anesthesia, monitored anesthesia care, never blocks, spinal/epidural anesthesia and local anesthesia.6. Assesses, monitors and manages the patients pain needs throughout all stages of care while in the Outpatient Department.7. Assures completion or obtains results of appropriate testing including but not limited to glucometer testing, electrocardiogram, lab tests, x-rays on patients as required.8. Evaluates the patients teaching needs based on age and development level. Provides and explains to patients and/or family instruction and handouts on pre, intra and post procedure preparation, discharge instructions and education information relating to their intervention.9. Documents in patients record according to hospital policy to assure pertinent information is communicated for continuum of care. Provides hand-off communication including all crucial and critical information.10. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:
Nursing Degree Required

License - Certification - Registration (Text Only):
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Missouri Required.

Experience:
Recent clinical experience preferred.Evaluative skills necessary for patient assessment.Decision making skills required for treatment planning/implementation.Clinical reasoning and judgment skills necessary for evaluation of nursing interventions and for safety of patients and self.Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact with patients, visitors and staff.Ability to recognize a need for and alter communication with patients with communication impairments.Ability to manage time, organize daily schedule to meet productivity standards, and cope with professional stress

Working Conditions:
Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.Ability to lift heavy objects using proper lifting techniques and with assistance as necessary.Ability to transfer and move patients who vary with ability to assist weighing 200+ lbs using proper lifting techniques and with assistance as necessary.Ability to push and pull equipment weighing in excess of 50 lbs using proper techniques and with assistance as necessary.
