Overview:
The director has the authority, responsibility and accountability for the overall operations and patient care provided in a clinical area 24/7. This individual displays competence in the 5 core health care competencies of interdisciplinary team work, quality improvement, evidence-based practice, patient-focused care, and informatics. Responsibilities include organizational planning, compliance with regulatory standards, fiscal management, setting and maintaining standards of nursing care and practice, coordinating services, and providing for the professional growth of the staff. The Director of Adult Inpatient Psychiatry oversees an 18-bed Adult Psychiatry Unit which is considered a short-term acute care unit. They are highly relational with a focus on creating positive interactions with both patients and employees through promotion of teamwork and collaboration.

Responsibilities:
Interdisciplinary Team Work/Communication and Relationship Builders:Effective communication (i.e. Written, public speaking). Disseminates information in a clear, transparent Way allowing continual feedback. Has the ability to facilitate groups and engage diverse groups in decision making.Contributes productively and encourages the full participation of all team members by making maximum use of the groups diversity. Develops credibility and effective relationships with the Medical staff, Ancillary personnel, Bargaining unions and community leaders. Serves as a resource internally and in the community, positively representing the health care profession and organization. Effectively communicates management standards to staff to achieve understanding and acceptance.Welcomes new members to the CVPH team by promoting a strong mission and vision of the organization and department, Responsible tor the clinical operations 24/7.Evidence Based Practice/Knowledge of the Health Care EnvironmentDemonstrates knowledge of current nursing practice ensuring compliance with standards of care and practice, State Nurse Practice Act, State/Federal Regulations and Professional Association (i.e. State Nurse Practice Act, State/Federal regulations and Professional Associations). Assist managers/staff who has direct line responsibility in the development of departmental goals and objectives. Collaborates in establishing priorities and plans for implementation. Monitors progress and holds managers/staff accountable for accomplishments of the goals in the agreed timeframes. Assists managers to evaluate and serve as a change agents assuring appropriate patient care delivery systems models of care and work flow. Understands and applies knowledge of healthcare economies and policy, participates in political legislation when applicable to promote Mental Health awareness in the community.Serves as a resource to managers/staff in the planning development, implementation and evaluation of new programs utilizing evidence-based and best practices. Conducts the necessary research for such program development utilizing current literature, site visits, and other appropriate resources.Informatics/Business Skills Works collaboratively with Human Resources and departments to continuously evaluate and improve the orientation and continuing education programs for patient service personnel. Assists in the recruitment and retention efforts of the Nursing Division and the hospital.Manages the departments operational and capital budgets. Knowledgeable on the effective application of informatics resources for patient care, processes and data. Develops and monitors department staffing plan and uses resources cost effectively.Develops and Participates in the education and staff concerning financial implications of patient care decisions.Quality/Patient Focused CareDemonstrate service excellence in all work with always putting patient care needs first. Utilizes research findings for the establishment of standards, practices and patient care models in the organization.Supports the development and implementation of organization wide patient safety and quality programs.Articulates the organizational and departmental /unit quality improvement goals and objectives.Develops implements and evaluates a performance improvement program which incorporates clinical Data, service excellence, quality improvement and risk management.Works with attorneys concerning legal status and court cases.Complete and submit transfer requests.Incident reports NIMERS and Justice Center reporting.Leadership/ Professional Practice Communicates effectively with clinical leaders to meet goals and enhance clinical performance. Assumes responsibility for own professional growth and maintains knowledge of current professional in nursing leadership practices. Create new programs after thorough analysis of organization/unit needs, and community and external environments. Demonstrates and models the ability to hold self and others accountable.Promotes and creates a positive view of Nursing and Leadership.Serves as a coach and mentor, willing to teach and be taught. Responds to quality of care concerns.OMH Surveys MHPD quarterly reports. Patient characteristic surveys etc.

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing required.Masters of Science in Healthcare preferred.Current Licensure as Registered Nurse in New York State required.Certification in psychiatric and mental health nursing preferred.Must demonstrate leadership and managerial abilities with good oral and written communication skills.Must Meet requiremments of pre-employment screening and physical.Five years relevant clinical practice experience required with at least 3 years of supervisory/management experience required.Experience with Microsoft Office, quality/risk management system, electronic medical record system, bed management system as applicable, transport resource management as applicable, learning management system, staffing/scheduling system, Pyxis, MSDS, automated medication dispensing systems as applicable, automated communication systems, BHS EMR and other role specific technology.As applicable, the individual has training / competency in attending to the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided.
