Overview

The Occupational Health Services Nurse is a nurse who demonstrates clinical strenths and leadership skills. The nurse should use skills in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of individuals with diseases and adverse health conditions. The OHS nurse provides support and guidance in anticipation of a patient's need to communicate or express concern of a health condition. The nurse is able to provide psychosocial and emotional sustenance to provide reassurance and continual support for growth and balance. The RN is also able to provide wellness initiatives that foster the individual's level to one of optimal health. This may be based on an individual basis or on a more community effort (colleagues, units, or Institute wide). The Occupational Health Services RN is accountable for the care provided, including primary prevention, quality of care, patient satisfaction, efficient use of resources, and ethical behavior.

Requirements

Scope of practice and responsibilities:

The scope of practice and the responsibilities of the RN in the Occupational Health Service involve the assessment and treatment of employees through the following activities:
  • Obtaining medical, health, occupational and environmental health, and psyche-social histories.
  • Performing pre-placement health screenings for any individual staff member joining the Institute (paid, not paid, and volunteers).
  • Reviews immunization and infectious disease immunity history; provides immunizations/vaccinations that are required to be cleared to join as a member of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), in accordance with DFCI's Infection Control and Occupational Health Policies.
  • Conducts annual Tuberculosis screening for designated staff per the DFCI's Infection Control and Occupational Health Policies.
  • Performing physical examinations as deemed appropriate.
  • Ordering and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Evaluating, treating, and managing occupational injuries and illnesses including but not limited to: musculoskeletal injuries; chemical, environmental, infectious disease exposures, and blood borne pathogen exposures.
  • Provides guidance regarding work restriction and or job modification when necessary and communicating any changes to the employee and to the manager.
  • In addition to providing evaluation of a work related issue, the RN provides case management services collaborating with the worker's compensation insurance carrier, and providing communication with the employee and manager.
  • Performs Fitness for Duty evaluations including those for drug and alcohol use on the job or premises.
  • Performs medical surveillance assessments as necessary.
  • Provides triage for emergencies within the department.
  • Provides care and appropriate referral for individuals who suffer non work-related injured or illnesses. May collaborate with the employee's primary care provider (with a written consent), for referral and follow-up as needed.
  • Collaborates with the Leave Coordinator on FMLA and other leave cases.
  • Is able to assess the need for an accommodation to help promote appropriate employee functioning while on the job. Will follow the ADA guidelines for this process, and collaborate with other departments such as with the employee's department Manager, Employee Relation's business partners, along with the Leave Coordinator.
  • Communicates and makes appropriate referrals with the employee who seeks advice for non work-related health conditions.
  • Performing simple office procedures (i.e. burn dressings and debridement, nail trephination, suture removal) as deemed competent by the supervising physician.
  • Providing health education with regard to injury and illness, disease processes, treatment plans, promotion of self-care, and prevention.
  • Documents and assures medical record completion in a timely fashion
  • Collaborates with the Medical Director, Human Resources, Environmental Health and Safety, Infection Control, the Employee Assistance Program, and other Institute staff in order to promote optimal health and safety for all.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, MDPH, CDC regulations and guidelines along with DFCI polices and procedures.
  • Participates in development, maintenance, and updating of OHS policies and procedures as requested by the Director.
  • Collaborates with the OHS team with designing, maintaining, and reporting on quality improvement activities within the department.
  • Attends meetings and serves on Committees as requested or required.
  • Collaborates with the other OHS team to ensure appropriate office/clinic coverage and continuity of service during regular working hours.

Practices in accordance with written guidelines in compliance with the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Has a current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • BS degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years professional Registered Nursing experience.
  • Has 1-2 years recent experience in Occupational Health, 3-5 years is strongly preferred.
  • Board certified in the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses is desirable.

  • Is able to perform phlebotomy.
  • Demonstrates strong computer skills with Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality in accordance the federal regulations and DFCI policy.

Working Conditions:

The Nurse works in a busy clinic setting with an office, reception area, exam rooms and consultation space, along with the rest of the team. In such a setting there may be exposure to infectious diseases, through airborne transmission or contact with blood and body fluids.

Patient Population:

The population that the Occupational Health Service and the NP who is a member of the team serve is varied culturally, in language, ethnicity, and norms. The NP must be able to understand and appreciate the special needs of these diversities and behaviors in addition to those of various age groups such as: adolescents, adults, and older adults, all who may be joining Dana-Farber Cancer Center as staff, researchers, students, or volunteers.
