We are seeking a Staff Nurse, Perioperative - PHC who will prepare operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques. Interpret policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate. Demonstrate proficiency in delivering care to assigned age specific patient population (e.g., infants, adolescents, adults, geriatrics, pediatrics), and participate in related continuing education.

In this position you will:
  • Implement and maintain established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives as well as improve organization performance, safety, environmental, and infection control policies.
  • Assist the surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations which could lead to breaches in aseptic technique. Report breaks in technique to the surgeon and to the Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Assist in maintaining correct count of instruments, sutures and sponges. Report incorrect counts immediately to the surgeon and notify the Nurse Manager/Charge Nurse.
  • Prepare rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment. Actively participate in supply/equipment management with attention to cost containment efforts. Open sterile supplies and set up for procedures.
  • Provide comfort and support for pre operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
  • Identify and care for specimens.
  • Drape patients for surgical procedures.
  • Prepare patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with hospital standards. Maintain patient's privacy.
  • Control narcotics and medications.
  • Assist in formulating and screening Quality Assurance criteria and providing in service training for staff.
  • Assess patient pre operatively and intraoperatively, and revise/implement patient care plan as appropriate. Observe emotional stability of patients, express interest in their progress and prepare for continuing care after discharge.
  • Assist other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines.
  • Evaluate outcomes of patient care, consult with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Monitor medical condition of patients and report changes to appropriate personnel.
  • Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control policies.
  • Prepare patients for scheduled procedures to assist in patient assessment.
  • Assist attending physicians, patients, and families as needed in times of stress or crisis. Ensure an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
  • Inspect area daily for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and standards and take corrective action when violations occur.
  • Maintain and care for equipment and supplies. Document maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain patient records and charts to ensure an accurate record of the patient's medical treatment.
  • Cover on call assignments; arrive at Medical Center within 30 minutes of notification.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
  • Attend meetings as required.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications for this position includes:
  • Education to meet certification, license or registration requirement
  • California Licensed Registered Nurse
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers sponsored by the American Heart Association
  • ACLS required:
  • ICU, ED, Urgent Care, Telemetry, PACU, GI Lab, Cardiac Physiology Lab, Cardiac Rehab, and Diagnostic Imaging - required at hire
  • New graduate nurses in ICU - required one year from date of hire
  • New graduates in the ED - must complete ACLS training prior to the end of orientation (16 weeks)
  • Employees transferring into areas that require ACLS - must complete the requirement within 180 days
  • PALS required ED, Urgent Care, PARC, PACU, and Pediatrics (PHCMC)
  • New graduate nurses in ED - within 1 year of hire date
  • Others - within 180 days of hire/transfer
  • 1 year OR / Perioperative experience in an acute setting

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:
  • Able to circulate in all services including trauma, heart, and other specialties strongly preferred
