Overview

The NP/PA is a clinician who demonstrates clinical expertise and leadership skills. The NP/PA uses clinical and academic skills in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer or hematologic disorders.

This position will be responsible for the delivery of integrative medicine services and development and delivery of educational programming in the Zakim Center for Integrative Therapies and Healthy Living. In collaboration with program leadership, this position will service as a resource for other integrative therapies practitioners, including but not limited to, acupuncturists and massage therapists. In addition to clinical care and program development, this position may also participate in research initiatives.

Requirements

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As an integral member of the Zakim team, the Specialist leads and manages the following program activities related to patient care, education, outreach, and research.

Patient Care
  • Conducts individual integrative medicine consults to review patient's treatment, symptoms, and goals to assess what integrative therapies may assist patient through cancer treatment. Consults may also include review of supplement use, lifestyle goals and education of how integrative therapies may help improve quality of life.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate systems and processes for professional standards of practice related to Integrative Medicine Therapies.
  • Collaborate with Zakim leadership to ensure evidence-based programming for DFCI patients

Education
  • Develop and implement professional continuing education curriculum that is based on integrative therapies art and science
  • Develop and implement patient education series on integrative therapies

Outreach
  • Communicate and represent Zakim programs and goals for delivery of integrative therapies to the DFCI community

Clinical Operations
  • Serve as a clinical resource for integrative therapy providers and practice coordinators
  • In collaboration with Center administrative director and supervisor help support daily clinical operations of the Zakim Center clinical practice.

Candidates must have proven ability to implement programming with various populations including patients and staff. Experience with cancer patients and/or chronically ill patients is required. Clinical experience in symptom management and integrative therapies is required.

NP Qualifications:
  • Authorization to practice in an expanded role as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Current certification from a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners
  • Minimum of 24 contact hours beyond generic education in pharmacotherapeutics
  • Masters degree in Nursing
  • Minimum of 1 year oncology nursing experience or 1 year Nurse Practitioner experience
  • Oncology Nurse Practitioner experience preferred
  • In possession of Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Federal DEA numbers
  • Certification in Oncology Nursing preferred - OCN, AOCN, CPON

PA Qualifications:

A Masters Degree and successful completion of an AAPA/NCCPA accredited Physician Assistant Studies program are required. Must be NCCPA Certified and licensed to practice as a Physician Assistant in Massachusetts. Must maintain current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses, and complete 100 hours of CME according to national and state regulations during each 2 year period of employment.

PA I: No professional experience required.

PA II: 2 years of qualifying professional Physician Assistant experience

PA III: 5 years of qualifying professional Physician Assistant experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Knowledge of integrative therapies required
  • Knowledge of nutritional supplements preferred
  • Demonstrates understanding of special needs and behaviors of the various populations served
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with Zakim Center Staff as well as all other oncology interdisciplinary team members
  • Excellent time management and communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills for managing group dynamics and concurrent, time-sensitive projects
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a team member, team facilitator, and team leader
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and problem solving ability.
