Tenure-Track Clinical Professor/Clinical Associate Professor/Clinical Assistant Professor/ Non Tenure-Track Clinical Professor of Practice/Clinical Associate Professor of Practice in the Faculty of Dentistry

Applications are invited for appointments as (A) Tenure-Track Clinical Associate Professor/Clinical Assistant Professor in Operative Dentistry/Restorative Dentistry (Ref.: 201800907) and (B) Tenure-Track Clinical Professor/Clinical Associate Professor or Non Tenure- Track Clinical Professor of Practice/Clinical Associate Professor of Practice in Operative Dentistry/Prosthodontics/Restorative Dentistry (Ref.: 201800908), Faculty of Dentistry, to commence as soon as possible, on a four-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal upon mutual agreement. For tenure-track post, an application for tenure will normally be considered before the expiry of the second four-year fixed-term contract.

The HKU Faculty of Dentistry is the only dental school in Hong Kong and is the only one in Greater China that uses English as the medium of instruction. The Faculty offers both undergraduate and postgraduate dental education which is internationally renowned. The Faculty’s strategic research themes are biomedical and tissue engineering, infection and immunity, and public health and healthy ageing. The high quality of the Faculty’s teaching and learning, clinical service and research excellence have won global recognition, as evidenced by the Faculty’s World Number One Ranking by the QS World University Ranking by Subject in the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. The Faculty also plays an important role in public and professional education through its knowledge exchange activities as well as in dental and oral health research and promotion in international, regional and local communities.

For post (A), the Faculty is seeking a strong academic clinician with a keen interest in clinical dentistry, teaching and a passion for research. The field of the appointee’s advanced training and expertise should be in Operative Dentistry/Restorative Dentistry with demonstrable clinical and research skills in Cariology.

For appointment as Clinical Associate Professor, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, clinical specialist or equivalent status in Operative Dentistry/Restorative Dentistry, and a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. They should also have (i) proven evidence for quality research, publications in high quality international journals, and local and regional recognition for scholarship and professional expertise; (ii) demonstrated ability in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical practice and research; (iii) active participation in Faculty and University affairs; and (iv) solid experience in knowledge exchange (KE) activities and leadership in professional education programmes or community engagement.

For appointment as Clinical Assistant Professor, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, and a Master of Dental Surgery degree or equivalent in Operative Dentistry/Restorative Dentistry. They should also have (i) ability in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching and practice; (ii) potential for and interest in research; (iii) ability and willingness to participate in Faculty affairs; and (iv) experience in KE activities.

For post (B), the Faculty is seeking a strong academic clinician with a keen interest in clinical dentistry, teaching and a passion for research. The field of the appointee’s advanced training and expertise should be in Operative Dentistry/Prosthodontics/Restorative Dentistry with demonstrable clinical and research skills in Digital Dentistry and CAD/CAM and/or Aesthetic Dentistry.

For appointment as Clinical Professor, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, clinical specialist or equivalent status in Operative Dentistry/Prosthodontics/Restorative Dentistry, and a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. They should also have (i) outstanding research and scholarly achievements; (ii) demonstrated leadership in teaching and learning; (iii) leadership in their clinical specialty; (iv) leadership in Faculty and University affairs; and (v) leadership in KE activities, with international recognition.

For appointment as Clinical Associate Professor, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, clinical specialist or equivalent status in Operative Dentistry/Prosthodontics/Restorative Dentistry, and a Ph.D. degree or equivalent. They should also have (i) proven evidence for quality research, publications in high quality international journals, and local and regional recognition for scholarship and professional expertise; (ii) demonstrated ability in undergraduate and postgraduate education, clinical practice and research; (iii) active participation in Faculty and University affairs; and (iv) solid experience in KE activities and leadership in professional education programmes or community engagement.

For appointment as Clinical Professor of Practice/Clinical Associate Professor of Practice, applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Dentistry, clinical specialist status in Operative Dentistry/Prosthodontics/Restorative Dentistry recognized by the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong or its equivalent in overseas jurisdictions and with at least 15 years’ experience for Professor level or at least 7 years’ experience for Associate Professor level in the relevant specialty after gaining clinical specialist status, and have proven ability of scholarship in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching and practice. Applicants for Clinical Professor should also have evidence of international recognition of clinical excellence, whereas applicants for Clinical Associate Professor should also have evidence of local or regional recognition of clinical excellence.

Clinical professoriate staff are expected to undertake a comprehensive portfolio of clinical teaching, research, knowledge exchange and administration, while clinical practice professoriate staff who may be local or overseas dentists in private practice or academic settings will focus mostly on teaching, teaching development and clinical service.

A globally competitive remuneration package commensurate with the appointee’s qualifi cations and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefi ts. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointments will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefi ts scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will also be provided as applicable.
