Department of Pediatrics

University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

The Division of Newborn Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is recruiting a Division Director. The ideal candidate for this position is a physician-scientist with a strong record of research accomplishments in patient-oriented, translational, or basic science research. The Division Director also should have excellent clinical and teaching skills and administrative experience sufficient to lead the division.

The Division of Newborn Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh oversees the care of critically ill neonates at several sites throughout Western and Central Pennsylvania. The division’s flagship sites are the 55-bed Level IV NICU at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the 83-bed Level III NICU at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. Other sites within the UPMC system include Level III NICUs in Erie and Harrisburg as well as several smaller community NICUs. The Level IV NICU at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh serves as the regional referral center for a multi-state area and is supported by the full spectrum of surgical and pediatric subspecialties. The division also oversees a very active neonatal transport program and provides care for an average of 10 neonatal ECMO patients each year. The Level III NICU at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital provides care for ~ 1900 of the 10,000 infants delivered at the hospital each year. As part of that care, faculty members from Newborn Medicine work closely with the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine to staff a comprehensive Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center. The Division of Newborn Medicine currently includes 30 faculty members, 12 Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellows, and approximately 70 Advanced-Practice Providers.

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, included in the Top 10 Honor Roll on U.S. News & World Report’s 2021-2022 list of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals,” is a 313-bed, free-standing children’s hospital located in the thriving Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh cares for over 80% of all hospitalized children (and over 90% of all hospitalized children under the age of 12) in our region, a large catchment area that includes Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, Northern West Virginia, and Southwestern New York. Overlooking the Allegheny River and much of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, the hospital is minutes away from the downtown cultural district, home stadiums for three major league sports teams, an internationally recognized culinary scene, and renowned centers of higher learning at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie-Mellon University.
