The University of Hong Kong School of Nursing now invites applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor in three new research clusters: Gerontology and Long-Term Care; Mental Health; and Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

The School of Nursing at the University of Hong Kong

Founded in 1911, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is committed to the highest international standards of excellence in teaching and research. The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine is the oldest higher education institution in Hong Kong, and a world leader in medical education and research. The School of Nursing sits within the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

The School of Nursing was established as the Department of Nursing in 1995 with just 42 students. It has since grown into a fully-fledged nursing school with around 1,600 students across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. One of the strengths of the HKU School of Nursing is its innovative, interdisciplinary and internationalised nursing curriculum, which is responsive to the needs of the population in Hong Kong while also being globally relevant. The School of Nursing also has close links with a range of health care settings in Hong Kong which facilitate the provision of cutting-edge learning environments for HKU nursing students. The School has developed strong networks with top schools of nursing internationally, enabling vibrant student and academic exchanges as well as productive research collaborations.

The HKU School of Nursing is also the leader among Hong Kong nursing schools in high impact nursing research. Benefitting from the outstanding research environment at HKU and within the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, the School of Nursing has made important advances in smoking cessation and tobacco control; health impact and prevention of violence; maternal and child health; quality of life; psycho-oncology; and elderly health promotion. Building upon existing strengths, the HKU School of Nursing now seeks to invest in broadening research in three key areas:

  • Gerontology and Long-Term Care

  • Mental Health
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Selection criteria

Applicants should possess a primary nursing qualification registrable with the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, and a Ph.D. degree in nursing or related disciplines. They should have a strong track record of high-quality impactful research indicated by international publications and successful external grant applications, preferably in gerontology and long-term care, obstetrics and gynaecology, and mental health. They should demonstrate a strong commitment to, and excellence in, teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels; be experienced in the supervision of research postgraduate students; and be able to contribute to the development and enhancement of nursing and healthcare related courses offered by the faculty. The appointees will be expected to develop significant independent research programmes with external research funding from competitive research schemes, undertake teaching duties at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and be active in research and educational innovations. Applicants should also demonstrate an international standing, a distinguished record of scholarship, leadership, the ability to work across different health science disciplines, and significant experience in capacity building, supervising and mentoring early career researchers and research students.

Terms of appointment

The tenure-track appointment will be made on a three-year term basis, withthe possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure after satisfactory completion of a second fixed-term contract.Direct tenure may be offered to exceptionally strong candidates.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and universitycontribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15 per cent of basic salary, as well as annual leave and medical/dental benefits. Housing benefits will also beprovided as applicable.
