POSITION SUMMARY: The Nurse Manager is under the supervision of the Day Shift Supervisor, has authority, responsibility, and accountability for the overall management of residents on a designated unit on a twenty-four hour basis. The Nurse Manager is responsible for directing, coordinating and supervising the activities of all nursing staff engaged in specific nursing practices and is responsible for transmitting each unit's staff concerns to the appropriate department supervisor. The Nurse Manager is responsible for the overall management of resident care 24 hours a day, seven (7) days per week.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS
A. Job Knowledge and Role Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates knowledge of age specific developmental factors specific to adult and geriatric residents (i.e. physical, cognitive, and socialization factors) in planning delivery of care.
2. Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and techniques necessary to care for residents with the following needs: therapeutic, neuro and dementia, dialysis, IV therapy, TPN, infectious disease and wound care, if applicable.
3. Provides nursing care in accordance with Resident Care Policies and Procedures and ensures the safety and well-being of the residents is maintained.
4. Attends all mandatory inservices by employee's anniversary date.
5. Maintains current New York State license in compliance with New York State regulations.
6. Acts appropriately under the direction of the RN Day Supervisor and acts as an active member of the interdisciplinary team.
7. Demonstrates ability to adjust to changes in units/shift assignments to meet resident and facility needs.
8. Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with Code of Conduct and Corporate Compliance Program when performing work functions.
9. Demonstrates knowledge of current Health Department Regulations.
10. Supervises assigned nursing personnel including responsibility for instruction, assignment, direction, performance assessment, discipline and dismissal of these assigned employees. Works cooperatively with other assigned supervisors on the unit to ensure satisfactory work performance of all unit employees.
11. Assists in assessing level and number of personnel assigned to the unit. Makes recommendations regarding such personnel for better resident care and utilization of such personnel and completes monthly staffing schedules for the unit.
B. Administrative Responsibilities:
1. Plans effective administration of nursing care in cooperation with other related disciplines on each unit.
2. Responsible for assessment of resident needs, development and implementation of comprehensive care plan. Consults with residents' physicians in planning resident care. Periodically reviews and updates comprehensive care plan.
3. Supervises planning of daily assignments for personnel on the unit.
4. Conforms with established policies and procedures and maintains staff awareness of these in their daily work.
5. Schedules and leads staff conferences to promote initiative and solve resident care oriented problems.
6. Works with interdisciplinary team members in developing a discharge plan for individual residents and assists in achieving discharge planning.
7. Interprets and implements principles of good nursing to nursing staff.
8. Evaluates incidents and determines emergency measures to be used, including the use of restraints. Assesses and directs emergency treatment to residents and staff involved in accidents. If necessary, notifies the attending physicians. Completes the incident report with causes investigated and corrective actions taken and/or suitable recommendations made to avoid recurrence. Updates the care plan with new interventions.
9. Assists in orienting and directing new staff.
10. Reviews and interprets work performance against accepted standards. Responsible for completion of performance evaluations of assigned nursing staff on Nurse Manager's unit. May review and provide input for performance evaluations for non-assigned nursing staff on alternate shifts. Completes proficiency audits for nurses and assigns and reviews audits for Certified Nursing Assistants.
11. Responsible for completion of PRI forms for unit, if certified.
12. Directs requisitions of equipment and supplies and encourages proper utilization of same.
13. May provide input to the Inservice Coordinator in planning nursing inservice programs and on-the-unit conferences based upon an assessment of staff's learning needs and/or resident care problems.
14. Handles resident or staff grievances and/or refers them to the appropriate department supervisor.
15. Assists in establishing and maintaining a positive staff and good public relations.
16. Maintains accurate, adequate records of resident care and related statistics as required.
17. Is available for emergencies and assistance to nursing staff as needed.
18. Communicates and acts as a liaison among residents, family, physicians and staff.
19. Accompanies physicians on rounds, examinations and treatments, as needed.
20. Incorporates the philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of The Absolut facility in correlation with resident care.
21. Promotes and maintains safe work performance by staff.
22. Informs the nursing supervisor and day shift supervisor of pertinent information concerning resident status, staff actions, employee attitudes and suggestions.
23. Conducts daily resident rounds to assess and/or supervise nursing care, assesses condition of residents, and safe, clean, comfortable environment, and conducts periodic resident rounds on evening and night shifts.
24. Receives reports from personnel on previous tour of duty and ensures that the continuity of care continues by staff on next tour.
25. Participates in Nursing Management Meetings and Comprehensive Care Plan Conferences.
26. May provide input in formulating nursing policies and procedures.
27. Notifies the resident's physician, family and/or health care agent of any change in the resident's condition.
28. Continues professional growth through reading current professional literature and attending professional meetings, seminars and workshops.
29. May perform duties listed on job description for staff nurse in his/her absence.
30. May be required to complete pre-admission PRI for prospective admissions.
31. Provides nursing care on the unit when necessary and cooperates with other members of the medical care team in coordinating residents' total needs.
32. Identifies and studies nursing service problems and assists in their solutions.
33. Observes nursing care and visits residents to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed and treatments and medications are administered in accordance with physician's instructions.
34. Perform other duties as required.
35. Demonstrates ability to perform all physical and mental job functions of a Certified Nursing Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse, if applicable.
C. Role Responsibilities-Interpersonal Skills:
1. Is aware of, and adheres to, Resident's Bill of Rights and Confidentiality of Resident Information.
2. Interacts with residents and family members, co-workers, clinical and ancillary staff in a non-judgmental, supportive and calm manner.
3. Addresses resident and family satisfaction issues immediately by reporting them to the Supervisor in a professional manner.
4. Is aware of Resident Abuse Reporting Law.
5. Participates as assigned in the orientation of new staff and demonstrates a positive, helpful and enthusiastic attitude.
D. Role Responsibilities-Safety:
1. Demonstrates ability to locate emergency equipment (i.e. emergency oxygen tank, etc.)
2. Understands and demonstrates knowledge of role in Fire and Disaster drills.
3. Demonstrates ability to identify and respond appropriately to potential behavioral outbursts.
4. Uses facility equipment safely.
5. Recognizes, removes, and/or reports potential hazards.
E. Resident Care Responsibilities-Resident Dignity:
1. Addresses residents in a respectful manner.
2. Discusses confidential resident information in appropriate areas only.
3. Knocks on door prior to entering resident rooms and maintains resident privacy and dignity when providing treatments or other resident care.
F. Other duties as assigned by the Administrator, Director of Nursing, and Day Shift Supervisor.
