The City of Colorado Springs Fire Department and its Medical Partners have posted an RFP to hire a contract Fire Medical Director for the Colorado Springs area. The Fire Medical Director is responsible for all aspects of medical oversight of the EMS System, including the provision of basic (EMT-B) and advanced life support (EMT-P) emergency medical services (EMS) in both emergency and non-emergency out-of-hospital settings.

The primary role of the Medical Director is to ensure that basic and advanced out-of-hospital medical providers deliver quality patient care based on applied research and industry best practice. Responsibilities include involvement with the ongoing design, operation, evaluation, and revision of the EMS system from initial patient access through the delivery of patients to the appropriate receiving facility able to provide definitive patient care or to an approved alternative location. The Colorado Springs EMS System shall recognize the Medical Director as the authority over patient care, and authorizes the Medical Director to restrict the patient care activities of those who deviate from published guidelines or who do not meet training standards. The Medical Director has the responsibility and authority to develop and implement medical treatment and hospital destination guidelines as supported by Colorado State statutes and regulations.

The Medical Director will work in conjunction with the Deputy Medical Directors to provide oversight to all clinical and patient care aspects of the Colorado Springs EMS & Non-Emergency Medical Services (NEMS) system, to include CSFD providers and the City contracted ground ambulance transport service and its providers. The Medical Director is appointed, serves at the direction of the office of the Fire Chief, and will work closely with the CSFD Medical Division Battalion Chief.
