University of Iowa Department of Surgery

Division of Vascular Surgery

The Department of Surgery invites applicants interested in the position of Director of the Division of Vascular Surgery.  Appointment rank is expected at the Associate Professor or Professor level and may be on either the tenure or non-tenure clinical track, consistent with experience and research interest.  This position will join a growing program involved in developing a multi-disciplinary, institutional center for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is the only academic medical center in the state and the faculty are actively engaged in the education and training of medical students, residents, and fellows. We have an ACGME accredited vascular fellowship program and an integrated vascular surgery residency within the division. UIHC provides a comprehensive range of programs and includes an adjacent integrated Iowa City Veterans Administration Medical Center, the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, and an outpatient facility housing our Vein Center. There are state of the art hybrid OR suites at both the University Hospital and the VAMC.

The Division is made up of full-time surgeons and dedicated nurse practitioners and nurse clinicians. The clinical experience includes the full spectrum of open and endovascular procedures including fenestrated branched aortic procedures, accredited noninvasive vascular laboratories at all three sites, and full access to interventional suites.

Applicants must be a graduate of an approved medical college and have completed ACGME accredited training in all phases of General Surgery and/or Vascular Surgery, and must be competent in endovascular surgery.  Applicants must be Board-eligible/Board-certified in Vascular Surgery. Applicants should have a minimum of 8-10 years’ experience in an academic medical environment, with progressively more senior leadership roles highly desirable.  Applicants will need to demonstrate effective interpersonal and communication skills and experience in working effectively in a diverse environment.  Teaching and participation in outreach activities are integral to the position.  Applicants with a history of NIH (or equivalent) level research funding are preferred. Experience in research at a level which enables procurement of outside funding is required for tenure track appointments.

Iowa City is the site of the first state capital and is a cultural hub within the state as well as the home of the world famous Iowa Writers Workshop. It retains its Big Ten college town charm and is home to many collegiate athletic events, outdoor activities, arts, literature, and music.
