The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Office of Pain Policy and Planning, Office of the Director. This high impact position offers a unique opportunity to advance pain research on a national level. The position is for an individual who will lead trans-NIH and broader trans-agency efforts to advance pain research as well as manage programs executed within the Office of Pain Policy and Planning (OPPP).  The incumbent will advise and coordinate the trans-NIH Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) initiative to enhance pain research that improves pain care as part of the broad federal effort to address the opioid crisis.  The Director, Office of Pain Policy and Planning will facilitate the implementation of trans-NIH pain research programs with the recent Federal Pain Research Strategy as a guide.  The OPPP Director will lead trans-NIH and contribute to trans-agency strategic planning and policy activities whose ultimate goal is to leverage research efforts and related policies to improve the quality of evidence-based pain care across the nation.  The OPPP Director will coordinate activities of the NIH Pain Consortium and the Interagency Pain Research Coordinating Committee and serves as the NINDS and NIH Pain Consortium spokesperson within and outside the NIH community on pain related research activities.  The OPPP Director and staff will perform pain research portfolio analyses and design and participate in the execution of Common Fund pain research programs. Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent, and have senior-level leadership, policy, and research experience, knowledge of pain research programs and strong abilities to lead the development and execution of collaborative work.  This individual should be known and respected within the pain research, provider, and advocacy community. S/he should have demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, and have broad visionary capabilities, with demonstrated ability to collaborate across government agencies and with researchers and other stakeholders in the pain community. S/he should have experience developing and setting strategic plans and priorities, as well as communicating and promoting pain scientific advances and relevant care policies and should have demonstrated skills in managing human and financial resources and budgetary planning.

Salary/Benefits:  Salary will be commensurate with the experience. The position will be filled under a Title 42(f) excepted service appointment and a full package of federal benefits will be provided. The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure requirements.
