JUNIOR FACULTY CHIEF RESIDENT           

 

This position is intended for a recently graduated board eligible pediatric resident with the aim of further development of leadership, teaching and administrative skills while also providing the opportunity to perform clinical work as a hospitalist. 

 

Overall Leadership and Communication

  • The Chief Resident Position reports to the Pediatric Residency Program Director and is responsible for elevating the scholarly and academic level of pediatric resident education for the Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program.
  • Has an active role in resident recruitment, including but not limited to attendance at regularly scheduled meetings meeting with candidates on interview dates, and participating in preparation of rank list.
  • Shares in the responsibility for the administration of the residency program and for the education of individual residents and medical students.
  • Advocates for the lifestyle and quality of life of the pediatric residents in regard to the program.
  • Represents the Department, both within the hospital and elsewhere.
  • Functions as leader, liaison and advocate for the pediatric residents.
  • Is an active, visible component of all parts of the program and is aware of all aspects of the program.
  • Attends at least one national or regional Chief Resident Conference (to be funded by the GME office).
  • Participates in teaching/leadership conferences, through VCH or other opportunities.
  • Provides assistance with conflict resolution between outside rotating residents and faculty.
  • Attends and participates in GMEC meetings.
  • Attends weekly GME team meetings when available.
  • Attends the daily safety huddle or assigns designee to represent the residency program.
  • Facilitates rotation schedules and call schedules in collaboration with UCSF Fresno Chiefs for all rotating residents at Valley Children’s.
  • Facilitates rotation schedules for all visiting residency programs who rotate on the ward with pediatrics and the VCH emergency department.
  • Organizes first year resident team-building retreat.
  • Encourages and assists medical students through direct contact and by assisting the supervising residents.

Resident Education, Supervision, Evaluation and Support

  • Works with Program Director to implement learning objectives to assure that they are current, appropriate and used as the guidelines for subspecialty rotations, particularly at VCH.
  • Works with Program Director to establish expectations for resident team services at VCH.
  • Assists the Program Director in revision and update of Pediatric Residency Orientation Manual(s).
  • Assists with the orientation of rotating residents and medical students at Valley Children’s hospital.
  • Leads, supervises, and provides orientation and feedback to residents regarding morning report daily.
  • Clinical duties are negotiable according to the chief resident’s interest. 

Role Model Function

  • Sets a high standard for academic excellence and clinical skills, particularly for first year residents.
  • Helps first year residents and medical students perfect their presentation skills.
  • Counsels residents on career plans and fosters interest in leadership roles.
  • Creates a medical student lecture series.
