The University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services invite applications for the for the joint position of Head, Department of Cardiac Sciences, Cumming School of Medicine, Clinical Department Head, Cardiac Sciences, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services, and Director, Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta, Cumming School of Medicine and Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone. These are key leadership positions within the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) and Alberta Health Services (AHS). The successful candidate would be offered an academic appointment with Tenure at the Professor level.

The Department of Cardiac Sciences is a major department within the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. The Department fully contributes to the research, educational and service missions of the Cumming School of Medicine. The Zone Clinical Department Head (ZCDH), Cardiac Sciences will lead and participate in the development of system wide clinical services throughout a large and diverse population that incorporates the rapidly growing urban centre of Calgary, as well as surrounding suburban and rural communities.  The Department of Cardiac Sciences has 84 primary physician members and over 100 members in six clinical sections including Cardiac Surgery. The Department is a leader in the continuous development and innovation of system-wide cardiovascular clinical services through the Sections of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, which are supported by Cardiac Anesthesia and Cardiac Critical Care.  The Department has accredited residency training programs in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery, an active postgraduate and graduate basic sciences training program, and a stellar record of major accomplishments in cardiovascular research.

The Libin Cardiovascular Institute of Alberta represents a partnership between the Calgary Zone of AHS, the Cumming School of Medicine, the University of Calgary, and the Alvin and Mona Libin Foundation. It is committed to excellence in the entire spectrum of basic and health service delivery research, disease prevention / health promotion, and education. Linkages with other health regions and Faculties, as well as with aligned community-based services are essential to the Institute’s success. Institute membership is interdisciplinary and is comprised of cardiovascular researchers, educators, clinicians and allied health professionals.

The Head will play a key role in a dynamic and fully integrated health care, research, and service delivery environment.   The Director is responsible for realizing the Institute’s vision of cardiovascular health, internationally recognized and funded research, and multidisciplinary educational programs that attract quality learners.  The Director will attract and manage financial resources so that the Institute’s goals are achieved.  Communicating and reporting to the Institute’s partners, community, and members about the Institute’s programs and performance will be an important aspect of the Director’s role.

Qualifications include an MD, eligibility for licensure in the Province of Alberta, and certification in either Cardiology or Cardiac Surgery.  The selected candidate must have a strong academic background with academic qualifications commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of Professor as well as proven leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills, and a strong academic and health service delivery background with demonstrated clinical, research and educational achievements.  The new Head/Director is expected to take office in July 2019.

Range of remuneration for the academic position is $103,020 to $170,000.  Additional compensation for clinical activities and Alberta Health Services leadership activities will also be provided.
