Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Applications are invited for the position of Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery for Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Boston Medical Center.

Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Boston Medical Center have initiated an international search for an innovative and highly collaborative surgeon to provide academic, clinical and management leadership for the Division while contributing as a member of the Department’s senior leadership team. 

The next Chief will be responsible for providing strategic direction for the growth and development of the Division’s faculty surgeons and programs, taking full advantage the stature and resources of BU School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, one of the nation’s oldest teaching hospitals still truly dedicated to the mission of serving the medically underserved.  This extraordinary academic medical center dates back to the founding of the medical school by Boston University and to the School’s longstanding clinical partnerships with Boston University Medical Center Hospital (founded in 1855) and Boston City Hospital (founded in 1864 as the first municipal hospital in the United States). In 1996, these hospitals merged to form BMC.

With more than one million patient visits and over 25,000 hospital admissions annually BMC, a private, not-for-profit, 567-bed, academic medical center, is the largest safety net hospital and busiest trauma and emergency services center in New England. A renewed commitment by the health system and the School of Medicine provides the new Chief an immediate opportunity to recruit to re-build clinical strengths in coronary artery bypass grafting, transmyocardial laser revascularization, heart valve repair or replacement, arrhythmia treatment and aneurysm repair.  The Division is poised for growth with significant investment planned for program development.

Candidates should have an M.D. degree and be currently board-certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  The ideal candidate is an accomplished surgeon scholar respected for clinical excellence in and nationally recognized for innovation and scholarship.  He/She will have served in a leadership role within a school of medicine and/or major teaching hospital and be qualified for appointment to the faculty of BU School of Medicine.  This is a unique role for an established academic surgeon who is skilled at managing in a complex academic enterprise, who has a strong vision for growth and who appreciates the importance of collegial decision-making in an interdisciplinary structure.  This position represents a unique role for a forward-focused leader.
