The LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA seeks a Chair of the Department of Surgery. The new chair will provide leadership to the department with the development and implementation of a dynamic vision for its future, while also working with the Dean and other Department Chairs in the ongoing evolution and success of the School. This individual will also hold the prestigious John C. McDonald Endowed Chair in Surgery.    Under the leadership of Dr. G.E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), the Chair will build on an excellent foundation of 27 full- and part-time faculty and staff and work collaboratively with other departments. Our health sciences center is home to the School of Medicine, School of Graduate Studies, and School of Allied Health Professions.  More than 800 students are enrolled in the degree programs at any one time.  Additionally, nearly 600 residents and fellows are trained each year.  

The Department of Surgery has diverse clinical settings including the comprehensive Ochsner LSU Health System hospital in Shreveport, Ochsner LSU Monroe, the local Shiners Hospital for Children and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The university’s primary teaching hospital, Ochsner LSU Health System- Shreveport, serves as a regional trauma center for North Louisiana, East Texas and South Arkansas. Overall, the combined facilities provide extensive experience in outpatient and inpatient care, including trauma, reconstructive surgery, children's surgery, and rehabilitation.

The primary objectives of the Department of Surgery are high quality care; progressive resident development in clinical, operative and research skills; and an environment which challenges students, residents, and faculty alike, while providing maximum opportunity for development.

The successful candidate must have proven experience as a leader who can inspire faculty and staff to work together to develop future leaders in the specialty.  It is also important that the candidate possess strong management skills with an ability to grow revenues and meet budgets.  Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of constituents, both internally and externally are vital. In addition, the chairman will oversee, coordinate, and encourage research within the department.

Candidates must have a distinguished record in Surgery, outstanding surgical skills and commensurate clinical activities. Candidates must have a firm commitment to the education of residents and medical students, and qualify for the rank of Professor of Surgery. Eligibility for a Louisiana Medical License is required.
