Paediatric Ophthalmologist / Continuing Appointment with Annual Academic Career Development

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre, are seeking a full-time Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Strabismus Surgeon with special interest in academic and leadership activities. The successful candidate will join an active clinical and academic Eye Care Team at the IWK Health Centre, hold a continuing appointment with annual academic career development at a rank commensurate with qualifications in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Dalhousie University and hold consultant privileges at the Nova Scotia Health.

The IWK is the sole perinatal and tertiary care pediatric hospital for the Maritime Provinces. It hosts the only pediatric ophthalmology care program in Atlantic Canada and the largest orthoptic service in the country. The successful candidate will be appointed at both the IWK for pediatric clinical and surgical care, and the Nova Scotia Health to participate in appropriate care for adult strabismus, as well as the post-graduate teaching programs in Pediatric Ophthalmology at Dalhousie University.

This position offers a unique opportunity to pursue an academic career. The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Oculomotility Program at the IWK enjoys an excellent reputation and a collaborative working environment with well-established relationships between many partners within and outside the University. The group consists of 4 full time academic pediatric ophthalmologists and is also the home for the Clinical Visual Sciences Program at the Health Sciences Faculty, a well established training program for orthoptists and ophthalmic technicians.

The Pediatric Ophthalmology Division participates in a progressive Academic Funding Plan with other surgical services at the IWK, which facilitates remuneration of academic surgeons for clinical, academic, educational and administrative activities. This new position is to replace the current Division Head of Pediatric Ophthalmology, and, as such, preference will be given to candidates who have interest and skill set to take on the leadership role of the Division, either immediately or in the future.

Halifax, the largest city in Atlantic Canada, offers an attractive maritime environment and an enviable lifestyle. Many desirable living areas are within walking distance or a few minutes cycling or drive from Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre.

Required academic qualifications include an MD degree from an accredited university, an Ophthalmology residency specialty training, and a RCPSC certification or equivalent, with both a recognized Fellowship and additional experience in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus surgery. Previous academic/clinic leadership experience is preferred. Eligibility for medical licensure in the Province of Nova Scotia is also essential.

Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. The university encourages applications from Indigenous persons, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
