The Office of the Clinical Director, Division of Intramural Research (DIR), National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health, invites applications from dentist-scientists for a full-time position as Deputy Clinical Director.  The NIDCR Office of the Clinical Director (OCD) encourages a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that promotes the translation of basic research discoveries into clinical practices. The OCD oversees all clinical activities and human subject studies related to the mission of the NIDCR by providing management and administrative support for clinical research protocols; offering a dental consult service for the NIH Clinical Center patient population; and supporting a Dental Clinical Research Fellowship.  These activities support the ground-breaking human clinical trials of the DIR with an emphasis on rare diseases and diseases of high biomedical impact.  The OCD works in coordination with the Office of Clinical Trials Operations and Management and the Office of the Scientific Director.  

The Deputy Clinical Director (DCD) provides direct support to the Clinical Director (CD).  The DCD will have major responsibilities in overseeing the clinical and translational research that is conducted by NIDCR clinical investigators.  This includes guidance and support for investigators throughout the lifecycle of a human subject study, including but not limited to study concept development, protocol development and IRB submission, study initiation, study oversight and monitoring, data management and human subject safety, and termination of study.  The incumbent will advise on clinical trials management and efficient study initiation and maintenance, and public-private partnerships.  The incumbent has responsibility and full authority to execute management activities of the DIR's Clinical Research Fellowship Program (DCRF) and the Dental Clinical Research Core (DCRC). The incumbent serves as Acting Clinical Director in the absence of the CD, exercising independent judgment when assuming the role in urgent or problematic situations.  The DCD also will serve as the Director or co-Director for the Dental Clinical Research Fellowship Program.  The incumbent actively participates in the recruitment and selection of the Dental Clinical Research Fellows.  The selectee may provide oral diagnosis and dental care to NIH patients as required by research protocols in which they are participating or collaborating (both in the outpatient and inpatient clinics).  The incumbent may provide supportive dental services to other research investigators and dental consultation service for the unique NIH Clinical Center (CC) population. 

Applicants must have a DDS or DMD degree from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body, or other dental school provided the education and knowledge is equivalent to that of an ADA-approved school, and have an active, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico and must qualify for credentials at the NIH CC (restricted, teaching or limited licenses do not qualify).  Incumbent must demonstrate administrative or managerial experience, preferably in government or academic institutions, that is relevant to clinical research. The incumbent must have experience with clinical research and regulatory oversight, clinical trials management or participation, human subject research.

It is preferred that applicants have experience in hospital administration, budgetary and resource allocation, clinical training, teaching and mentoring experience, research publications, and leadership experience.

Salary will be at the GS-15 level in the Federal Civil Service and be commensurate with training credentials and clinical experience.  A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life, and long-term care insurance, as well as a Thrift Savings Plan, etc.) is available.
