VICE CHAIRPERSON OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE

The Department of Emergency Medicine of the MetroHealth System (MHS), a principal teaching hospital of the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, seeks a dynamic and respected leader in academic Emergency Medicine for Vice Chairperson of Emergency Medicine in the CWRU Department of Emergency Medicine at MetroHealth.

The MHS is a fully integrated provider of high-quality healthcare, consisting of the 731-bed MetroHealth Medical Center and 24 additional inpatient and outpatient facilities throughout Cuyahoga County. Most recently, The MetroHealth System has embarked on an ambitious $946 million Campus Transformation that includes a reconstruction of our main campus, including a new hospital, outpatient plaza, garages and other buildings. Construction of the new inpatient facility is set to be completed in 2022.

MetroHealth is conducting a national search for a Vice Chair of the Emergency Medicine Department, to help lead the transformation of medical care at MetroHealth – paving the future for medical research, education, and clinical care. With strong leadership in the Department of Emergency Medicine and alignment with the health system’s service line organization, the Department has demonstrated outstanding clinical growth and recognition for clinical excellence and financial success. This position will be proposed for a faculty appointment with CWRU School of Medicine; Department of Emergency Medicine. The Department has had significant growth over the past several years with the addition of 3 community emergency departments, expansion of our fellowship programs, and growth in our pre-hospital care programs. The Vice Chair position was previously held by Rita Cydulka, MD, a national leader in Emergency Medicine. The vacancy is a result of Dr. Cydulka’s retirement. The Vice Chair is expected to collaborate with the Chair on developing clinical, educational, and research programs to further the growth of the Department. Demonstrated leadership in clinical operations, innovative teaching programs, and/or research will be a key factor in the selection of the successful candidate.

MetroHealth has a program of deliberate succession planning and leadership development. The successful applicant to this position must have the background, interest and ability to assume a leadership position in the organization, including potentially a future Chair role. While there is stable leadership of the Department, the existing Chair is committed to the development and mentoring of the Vice Chair towards an eventual potential Chair role.

The Vice Chair will help drive innovative strategy for the creation of a Department of Emergency Medicine for the 21st Century as MetroHealth reimagines and rebuilds its main hospital campus over the next few years. Success in this critical role also requires an appreciation of population health, health equity, and reducing health disparities through understanding of root causes, mechanisms and interventions, and a desire to apply these insights to improve the delivery of care. Important research work conducted at MetroHealth by the Department of Emergency Medicine faculty include bench research in cellular mechanisms of ischemia/reperfusion, treatment of opioid overdose and dependence, management of heart failure exacerbation, and the treatment of acute stroke, among other interests.

This is an unparalleled opportunity for an innovative executive with a desire to lead a prestigious clinical, education, and research enterprise, and serve as an integral leader of MetroHealth during this moment of transformative change across the healthcare industry. The new leader will be part of a mission-driven system that educates health professionals and scientists and provides leading-edge patient care, community service and research whose impact is global.

Qualified applicants should hold an MD, DO, or MD/PhD, and must be board certified in Emergency Medicine. The applicant must be qualified for a faculty appointment with CWRU School of Medicine; Department of Emergency Medicine at the Associate or Professorial level. The successful applicant should have prior operational leadership experience and a management degree is preferred. Applicants should be eligible for employment in the US and for an Ohio medical license. Compensation and Tenure will be commensurate with experience and achievement.

Interested candidates should send their CV or resume by April/May, 2019 to:

Charles L Emerman, MD, Professor and Chairman of Emergency Medicine at cemerman@metrohealth.org  and

Kari Rish, Director of Provider Relations and Recruitment at krish@metrohealth.org.

Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. In employment, as in education, Case Western Reserve University is committed to Equal Opportunity and Diversity.
