The University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix invites applications, inquiries and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Surgery. This is a historic opportunity for an outstanding academic surgeon to build an academic department of excellence and expand complex surgical care for a rapidly growing community.

The chair will work closely with Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix (BUMC-P) leadership and institute directors to align clinical strategy and research in partnership with vital community physicians. BUMC-P is ranked 31st in the nation by US News & World Report.

A new Dean, Guy Reed, MD, MS for the College of Medicine along with the full LCME accreditation granted in June, 2017, and the February 2015 completion of the 30-year academic affiliation agreement between the University of Arizona and Banner Health provides a unique opportunity to further the growth of the College of Medicine-Phoenix through the development of a robust, academically oriented department. Reporting to the dean, the chair will recruit and engage full-time faculty as well as partner closely with affiliated community physicians practicing at BUMC-P in the creation of additional divisions. The department currently has 20 full-time faculty in six divisions (general surgery; trauma, critical care, & acute care; bariatric; endocrine; oral & maxillofacial; and wound & reconstructive) and over 200 affiliated faculty providing complex subspecialty surgical care. The department also hosts outstanding residency programs, including one of the first surgical training programs in the Southwest.

The successful chair candidate will be known as an outstanding leader in academic surgery and have an excellent track record in clinical care, research and teaching within a nationally recognized surgical program. The chair will demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism, personal commitment, integrity and leadership as they build each mission within the department. Current board certification in general surgery and/or a related surgical subspecialty area is required. Candidates must exhibit values consistent with the mission of the UACOM-P and Banner Health System to serve, heal, lead, educate and innovate.

Nominations, expressions of interest, and applications (including a cover letter and resume) can be sent in confidence to the University of Arizona’s consultants, Jeff Schroetlin and Megan Welch with Witt/Kieffer at mwelch@wittikieffer.com; phone 630-575-6904.
