Job Description Job Summary
Works under the direct supervision of a physician as permitted by the laws in the state of Indiana in hospital, as a first assistant in surgery or in patient clinic. The NP or PA in Pediatric Neurosurgery assists the supervising surgeon in the management of patients, and performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures under the supervision of the surgeon. The NP or PA work closely and assists the surgeon in providing quality, efficient and continuous, and cost-effective care during the patient's hospitalization, post-op period and outpatient clinic.
Job Duties
1. Take detailed patient medical histories
2. Perform and record physical examinations
3. Diagnose and decide treatment of patients
4. First Assists competently without continual prompting
5. Initiate therapy, prescribe medicine, give vaccinations
6. Order lab tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic studies
7. Counsel patients on preventive care and/or medical problems
8. Write appropriate admission orders (including nursing care, medication orders, laboratory and radiological examinations, and obtain consultations approved by the surgeon).
9. Review pertinent abnormal findings in the patient's history, physical examination, radiological and laboratory data with the surgeon, and obtain appropriate consultation, additional laboratory or radiological studies as needed, and initiate appropriate medical intervention.
10. Record in progress notes pertinent findings from history, physical examination, laboratory studies, and radiological examination.
11. Evaluate unstable patients and initiate emergency management (of conditions such as ICP, evolving SDH)
12. Write appropriate postoperative orders including general and specific nursing care, medications, including controlled substances for analgesia and sedation, laboratory and radiological studies.
13. Attend the patient in the early postoperative period reviewing laboratory and radiological data and making appropriate interventions.
14. Initiate treatment of postoperative complications advising the attending surgeon of unexpected events, providing an accurate synopsis of events related to a major change in the patient's condition and describing corrective measures already taken.
15. Daily assessment of patients postoperative course, write note of patients progress in chart as it pertains to the supervising physician- and implement indicated therapy as determined by the supervising physician.
16. Complete discharge paper and summaries.
17. Provide excellent care in the outpatient setting in clinic in collaboration with the pediatric neurosurgeon.

Educational and Experience Required
Master's in Science of Nursing for NP or Master's degree Master of Arts, Master of Science for PA is required
Pass the exam administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. (PA-C) or board certification for NP
Maintain one hundred hours of Continuing Education every two years to retain certification. A recertification exam must be passed every ten years for PA
