Department of Emergency Medicine

Mount Auburn Hospital, a 220-bed, Harvard Medical School affiliated regional teaching hospital serving the greater metropolitan Boston-Cambridge area, is seeking an outstanding leader, clinician and teacher for the position of Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine. Leading a Department of more than 100 professionals including an exceptionally talented faculty of physicians and physician assistants, the Chair directs Mount Auburn’s emergency services in a primary market serving 12 communities including numerous schools and colleges. The Department sees approximately 35,000 visits annually, has 12,000 walk-in visits per year, provides medical direction and continuing education to first responders, and plays a leadership role in regional emergency preparedness drills and simulations. The Hospital is a founding member of the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) network, a $5.5B, 13 hospital health care system serving eastern Massachusetts that recently received approval from all state and federal regulatory agencies to begin joint operations in March, 2019.

The Department is well known for its deep commitment to medical education and the Chair oversees emergency medicine residents rotating from the Harvard – Beth Israel Deaconess Emergency Medicine Program.

The Hospital is distinguished by a full spectrum of tertiary services including critical care with a pulmonary/critical care intensivist team along with nationally recognized cardiac and cardiac surgical programs. Academically the Hospital is distinguished with an ACGME accredited residency in medicine and radiology, with rotating residents from within the Harvard system in numerous specialties including surgery and GYN. The Department of Emergency Medicine provides a rich learning environment for all residents and learners. Emergency Medicine physicians have teaching appointments and engage in faculty research and related publications. Mount Auburn’s medical staff is recognized nationally for their expertise in managed care and risk-based contracting with participation in numerous commercial and governmental contracts, including the Medicare Shared Savings and Medicare Advantage programs.

Candidates for this position must be eligible based on education and experience for an academic appointment on the Harvard Medical School faculty at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Board certification in emergency medicine is required. The successful candidate will have an exceptional track record of academic and administrative accomplishments including a strong commitment to excellence, clinical quality, and patient safety along with the ability to grow and sustain a culture of collaboration, teamwork, and achievement.
