Staff Scientist

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), Intramural Research Program (IRP), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a Staff Scientist in the RNA Regulation Section (RRS) of the Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics (LGG) in Baltimore, MD.  The overall goals of the RRS are to investigate the mechanisms that regulate gene expression programs in aging physiology and pathology, particularly at the post-transcriptional level.  The general working hypothesis in the RRS is that post-transcriptional gene regulation directly impacts upon the normal physiologic decline of aging as well as the aberrant gene expression programs in age-associated disease.  The Section is testing this hypothesis in normal aging processes by analyzing gene expression in age-associated inflammation, impaired muscle regeneration, cellular senescence, and declining responses to proliferative and metabolic stimuli.  The Section is also investigating this hypothesis in age-associated diseases such as sarcopenia, neurodegeneration, and cancer.

Excellent written and oral (English) communication skills are required.  The incumbent will have a major role in assisting the Laboratory Chief in project management, manuscript preparation and experimental design, training postdoctoral fellows and postbaccalaureate students, managing both internal and external lab meetings, and maintaining research continuity within the Laboratory.

The Staff Scientist will be responsible for supporting two major related areas of rising importance in LGG:  (1) Mouse models of aging-associated declines:  The Staff Scientist will oversee the generation and analysis of mice with genetic alteration in RNA-binding proteins and/or noncoding RNAs governing processes such as neurodegeneration and myogenesis/muscle regeneration; and (2) Human histology:  He or she will develop approaches to identify in human tissue senescent cells as well as other specialized cells (e.g., muscle-resident macrophages) driving changes in tissue function with age.

Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the Laboratory.  Although this Staff Scientist will be supervised by the Laboratory Chief, he/she will be interacting with the scientists from the IRP and scientific community at large.  The successful candidate will have experience in collaborative research documented in publications and more generally will have a history of publications that reflect experience in the analytical requirements of this position.

The successful individual must have a Ph.D., or M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in biomedical sciences or related fields.  Salary is commensurate with research experience and accomplishments.  A full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, Thrift Savings Plan participation, etc.) is available.  All employees of the Federal Government are subject to the conflict of interest statutes and regulations, including the Standards of Ethical Conduct.  Additional information regarding the NIA IRP is available at the following website: www.irp.nia.nih.gov.

To apply: Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, bibliography, statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation to:  Angela Prazak, Staff Assistant; Office of the Scientific Director; Vacancy # NIA-IRP-19-11; National Institute on Aging, Biomedical Research Center, 251 Bayview Boulevard, Suite 100, Room 04C230, Baltimore, MD  21224 or email: niairpjobs@mail.nih.gov. Applications must reference the Vacancy # NIA-IRP-19-11 and be received on or before May 17, 2019 for consideration.
