Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, established in 2015 in the dynamic capital of Astana, Kazakhstan, is seeking faculty to be appointed as clinical department chairs in Pediatrics and Adolescent Health, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Anatomic Pathology.

The clinical department chair is expected to provide visionary leadership of the department and to oversee departmental strategic planning to improve the quality of the clinical, educational, and research programs. Such planning should be in accord with the overall vision of the university, the medical school, and the affiliated hospitals of the University Medical Center (UMC).  The chair is responsible for the academic development of the department, the performance of its faculty in the principal areas of academic endeavor, and the status of each of the hospital clinical units that is under the department’s jurisdiction.

The chair is also responsible for the overall planning and assessment of the quality of clinical programs within the department and for attending to the department’s service delivery capability insofar as it affects the department’s academic program. This task normally is carried out in cooperation with the clinical service chiefs and, as appropriate, the leaders of specialty programs within the discipline.

The successful candidate will have an MD, MBBS, or equivalent graduate/professional degree, a specialization in pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, or anatomic pathology, at least 15 years of post-specialization professional teaching and research experience, and a significant level of academic productivity as evidenced by publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.  Extensive management and administrative experience (more than 10 years), research interests that complement NUSOM’s research priorities, excellent communication skills, and English fluency are required. Kazakh and/or Russian fluency is desirable.

NUSOM and UMC is being developed in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). NUSOM offers a US-style curriculum taught in English. NUSOM’s mission is to educate a new generation of clinically skilled and research-focused physicians prepared for leadership positions in research, education, and clinical care to improve the health of individuals in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and around the world. The school will graduate its inaugural class of MDs in spring 2019. A highly competitive salary, benefits package with free housing (based on rank and family size), relocation allowance, home leave travel (twice per year), health care coverage, educational allowance for dependent children, and research start-up funds are available.

Applicants should forward by email a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references to Dr. Margaret C.
