In order to continue to provide the highest quality patient care, the Department of Surgery must ensure they are offering the highest level of surgical care through innovation and research to fulfill current and future patient needs. 

The Department of Surgery Chair is accountable for managing 11 surgical divisions with over 130 surgeons in advancing the clinical practice through cutting edge surgical procedures, progressive research, educating future surgeons and capitalizing on technology.  The Chair will partner with administrative leaders in fostering collaboration across other surgical departments and the organization in achieving exceptional patient outcomes and prioritize growth and financial business strategies to position the department for the future.  A key responsibility is to actively recruit and retain top talent to sustain Mayo Clinic’s vision of being the most trusted partner in healthcare.  The Chair will be responsible for inspiring and challenging staff to be creative and innovative to continue Mayo Clinic’s mission of excellence.  

Candidates must be board certified in Surgery with additional specialty training and recognized as an expert in their specialty surgical practice. Will be required to successfully obtain a Minnesota license.  Academic rank of Full Professor is strongly preferred.  Must be a proven successful leader with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and experience with inspiring and engaging peers, by leading them through influence.  Must have experience building relationships and networks nationally and globally.  Actively pursues novel approaches to surgical techniques and technologies and ensures the safest and highest quality patient care.  

The Rochester Department of Surgery Chair position is based in Rochester, Minnesota with responsibility across the Midwest practice.  The Chair role is a term limited position that comprises of 2 consecutive 4 year terms.
