The Department of Pathology, Division of Anatomic Pathology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, invites applications for the position of Chief Director of Anatomic Pathology. This is a tenure track position offered at open rank, commensurate with qualifications. The Chief Director of Anatomic Pathology serves on the Executive Committee of the Department of Pathology and will interface with the leadership at the University of Virginia Medical Laboratory and Medical Center.

Responsibilities will involve directing the activities of Anatomic Pathology including Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology and Autopsy Services; establish an effective working relationship with the Medical Staff, Hospital Administration and other Departments regarding the Anatomic Pathology operations; and assist the Chair in carrying out the policies for the daily operation and quality of the Anatomic Pathology services including responsibility for meeting CAP accreditation.  The Chief will ensure excellence in the teaching and research missions of the Department and collaborate with colleagues from other departments corresponding with subspecialty interests.

The Department of Pathology is staffed by 30 clinical faculty, 35 residents and fellows in anatomic and clinical pathology. In addition to general Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology services, specialty diagnostic subservices include neuropathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, renal pathology, ocular pathology and neuromuscular pathology. Specific faculty have subspecialty training in and/or have developed internationally-acknowledged expertise in gastrointestinal, head and neck, gynecologic, breast, pulmonary, pediatric, genitourinary and bone/soft tissue pathology. The AP services perform over 30,000 surgical cases, 17,000 cytology specimens, and approximately 220 autopsies per year.

Candidates must have a MD degree or equivalent, be board-certified in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, and be eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia. Fellowship training and/or experience in general surgical pathology and/or a subspecialty area of surgical pathology is encouraged.
