The Office of the State Pathologist advises An Garda Síochána on matters regarding forensic pathology and performs post-mortem examinations at the request of a coroner and the Minister for Justice and Equality or An Garda Síochána.

Vacancies will shortly arise for the positions of Chief State Pathologist and Deputy State Pathologist. The successful candidates will advise An Garda Síochána on questions involving forensic pathology and will provide evidence as an expert witness in any criminal court and Coroners Court proceedings resulting from a death in which a post mortem examination has been carried out.

The Chief State Pathologist is responsible for the leadership and administration of the Office of the State Pathologist and is assisted in this role by a number of Deputy State Pathologists.

The Deputy State Pathologist will be required to deputise for the Chief State Pathologist as and when required.

Applications are invited from medical practitioners who are registered in the General Register of Medical Practitioners or who are entitled to be registered and have the requisite additional specified qualifications as outlined in the Information Booklet for this campaign.
