Job DescriptionThis job oversees the audit process of controlled substance documentation and reports results to pharmacy management and involved nurse managers. Responsible for consulting with nurse managers for remediation, using Medacist and CII safe reports as indicators of diversion and follows up with affected parties including nurse managers, security, and pharmacy management in cases of suspected diversion. Additionally, this job completes controlled substance distribution audits by maintaining inventory reconciliation and monitoring and evaluating reports from CII safe and Pyxis. This job investigates and reports any variances immediately to Director of Pharmacy. This job completes orientation of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on controlled substance procedures and completes training of new nurses in orientation on controlled substance handling and documentation.

Education

Required - Registered Nurse Diploma

Preferred - Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business/Health Administration, Nursing or related field

Work Experience

Required - 5 years related healthcare experience or three years related healthcare experience with a Masters degree.
Experience working with and maintaining confidential information, working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.

Certifications

Required - Current RN License in the state of practice

Preferred- Related professional certification

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong conflict resolution skills
  • Strong presentation skills


Job Duties
  • Organizes, plans, and monitors auditing procedures.
  • Participates in auditing of controlled substances documentation and administration.
  • Reports results of audits and intervenes during suspected cases of diversion.
  • Participates in activities of professional growth.
  • Completes orientation of pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and new hires on controlled substances procedures.
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms. The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
