Full Time, Weekdays. 36 hours/week. Pay Range is between $30.39-$45.60/hr, depending on years of relevant and like experience. Boulder Community Health is a Certified Level II Trauma Center. POSITION SUMMARY Coordinates total nursing care for the peri-operative procedure patient. Provides intensive observation and care for the pre- and post-operative procedure patient for which an anesthetic agent or moderate sedation was used. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education or Formal Training Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.) 1. Colorado Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing. 2. Basic Life Support (BLS) required by end of conditional period. 3. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required within conditional period. 4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required within 6 months of hire (eff. 6/30/2019) for all PACU RN's required to participate in on-call rotation. Those RN's with a secondary job code are not required to take on call shifts. 5. Member of professional organization encouraged. 6. Certification encouraged. Knowledge, Skill and Ability 1. Able to assess, treat and/or care for patients of all ages. 2. Demonstrates assessment and response to changes in the patient's condition. (Basic understanding and integration of patient care and practice.) 3. Communicates clearly on all aspects of documentation. 4. Demonstrated physical and mental ability to apply to nursing theories, procedures and standards to clinical practice. 5. Must assume call responsibilities. 6. Must be flexible to rotate shifts and adjust hours as needed. Experience Previous experience in Endoscopy, PACU or adult critical care preferred WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES 1. Physical working environment may include, but not be limited to, any of the following hazards: chemicals, electrical, mechanical, biowaste, explosive, radiation, laser, laser plume, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc. 2. Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, multi-stimuli, etc. 3. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to constantly stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to stoop, crouch and twist. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, squat and sit. 4. The employee must be able to consistently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds, frequently support, push, pull and/or lift up to 30 pounds and occasionally support, push, pull and/or transfer up to 50 pounds (for example, moving a patient from a wheelchair to a bed). 5. Functional physical demands include manual dexterity, fine motor skills and reaching. 6. The following senses will be needed for essential duties of the job: speech, vision, hearing, smell and touch. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Clinical Patient Care a. Provides safe, competent, effective nursing care in accordance with hospital, OCC/PACUs standards of care, policies and procedures. When applicable, employees must be able to adjust the essential functions they perform appropriately to the age of their patient/customer. b. Demonstrates basic knowledge of care of the peri-operative/procedure patient. c. Assesses patient status systematically and anticipates and responds to changes in patient clinical condition. Reports pertinent observations or changes to appropriate physicians and/or clinical lead and implements emergency procedures as necessary. d. Demonstrates knowledge of arrhythmia recognition and treatment modalities. e. Administers medications and performs treatments as ordered. f. Maintains complete and accurate documentation. g. Ability to assess, treat and/or care for patients with regard to age. PACU treats infant to geriatric. h. Actively seeks the participation of members of the health care team and patient's family to ensure continuity of care. i. Prepares specimens and lab forms for laboratory analysis. j. May be required to perform point of care testing. May be a point of care trainer. k. It is the expectation that all care providers' document accurately and in real time, utilizing the electronic medical record within their department. l. Is familiar with organization, department and job specific fire, safety and disaster policies. 2. PACU RN: a. Demonstrates clinical competency with routine PACU assessment skills. b. Assists with special tests or procedures (e.g. epidural injection, regional blocks, local injection, A-line insertion, and chest tube insertion). c. Manage invasive lines in conjunction with invasive monitors or CVP manometer (A-lines, subclavian). d. Demonstrates knowledge and management of the patient with inadequate airway resulting from emergence from anesthesia, regional anesthesia and moderate sedation. 3. Patient Education a. Evaluates and plans for patient, significant other and family learning needs and provides pre and post-procedure education. b. Utilizes additional hospital resources as needed. 4. Management and Decision Making a. Sets priorities utilizing effective time management in planning and providing patient care in both patient and unit situation with completion of responsibility. b. Provides constructive input to problem solving in both patient and unit situation. c. Consults with and/or advises appropriate personnel of situations requiring follow-up or attention. 5. Professional Growth a. Continues to expand knowledge base through clinical practice and self-directed learning, identifying own strengths and weaknesses. b. Participates in peer review process as requested. c. Attends unit educational programs and staff meetings. 6. Professional Contributions a. Promotes the achievement of goals of the unit, division, and hospital. b. Shares professional knowledge with health care team. c. Functions as preceptor for students and/or orientees with direction. d. Assists with data collection for QA/PI activities. e. Participates in review of standards. f. Participates actively in projects, committees and meetings both inter- and interdepartmentally. g. Takes call after hours, holiday and weekends on a rotation basis to ensure twenty-four-hour coverage of the unit (per diem- department specific). Mandatory overtime.
