Neurosurgery at Dunedin Hospital

Neurosurgery services have a proud history in the provision of care in Dunedin and this is an exciting opportunity to be a member of this regional service in supportive hospital and community environments.

Together with one full-time hospital neurosurgeon appointment and one academic neurosurgeon appointment in Dunedin alongside five neurosurgeons in Christchurch you will form a regional service under the Governance of a separate Governance Board, the South Island Regional Neurosurgical Service was established in 2011 and functions as a single service, delivered from two sites, Christchurch and Dunedin.

About the role

In this role you will undertake one theatre list and one day of clinics per week. You will also travel to our secondary Hospital in Invercargill to undertake a clinics at times. You will participate in the 1:3 acute on-call roster.

Our ideal candidate will be an excellent surgeon with experience in Acute Neurosurgical trauma and proven track record in successful cranial and spinal surgery.

Outside of work, you'll find life in Dunedin to be very easy with its affordable living, great schools, laid back lifestyle and world-famous wildlife on the Otago Peninsula. The town centre is compact but has plenty of energy, which is to be expected with it being a University town. This sustains some great activities such as theatre, live-music and a diverse selection of restaurants and cafés. Central Otago is a notable holiday destination and many outdoor recreation opportunities are easily accessible from Dunedin.

About you

You must be eligible for a locum tenens special purpose registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand, and have a higher qualification in the specialty of Neurosurgery. It is essential you have general neurosurgery training and skills. It will be a requirement of this tole that you undertake a series of witnessed procedures at the beginning of this role under the supervision of the Clinical Director South Island Neurosurgery (or delegate in Christchurch.

Candidates who are not currently registered with the New Zealand Medical Council should be aware that from 1 November 2017 it will be the requirement of the NZ Medical Council that your qualifications are approved through EPIC.
