The Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center (DDPC) is a 51-bed psychiatric hospital serving the entire State of Maine that provides services for people with severe mental illness. As a member of a statewide community of care givers, DDPC collaborates with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness, their community and personal supports, to provide recovery-oriented, respectful, compassionate, and effective psychiatric care and treatment in the least restrictive, safest, and most therapeutic environment we can create. DDPC is located in Bangor, ME.
As DDPC’s Clinical Director, you will oversee all medical services in DDPC by directing and coordinating multidisciplinary treatment modalities; directing the psychiatric care of patients with severe and persistent mental illness; coordinating with gatekeeper agencies to determine appropriate hospital placement for new admissions; and providing care for patients receiving outpatient services. You will also develop policies and supervise all professional staff. Well qualified candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, and be able to articulate and employ the Mission, Vision, and Values of DDPC with our staff as well as with community providers. Your duties will include:
- Administering and overseeing clinical programs involving direct treatment of patients, providing proper psychiatric/medical treatment, and overseeing development of specialized community-based programs, to ensure patients receive appropriate, quality, care which meets established standards.
- Monitoring individual treatment plans and use of medication to ensure the proper quality of patient care.
- Overseeing patient treatment in DDPC as well as community settings to ensure program operation and effectiveness.
- Planning, coordinating, and overseeing development of specialized treatment programs to meet the needs of specific patient groups.
- Monitoring and reviewing individual treatment plans, treatment team therapeutic milieu, clinical resources, and overall goals to control and ensure quality and effectiveness of treatment programs.
- Directing incident investigations which have significant clinical importance in order to develop policies and procedures for review of such incidents, and to prevent future occurrences.
- Reviewing and evaluating admission and discharge processes to ensure proper grounds for patients’ admittance to, as well as timely release from, DDPC.
- Directing the operation and use of medical clinics, infirmary, EKG, X-ray, laboratories, pharmacy, central supply, and physical therapy to ensure proper use of available resources.
- Assessing the need for continuing education and training of all medical staff and other DDPC professionals, to ensure maintenance of accepted professional standards.
- Collaborating with community mental health centers and/or regional offices to coordinate prescreening of referrals and follow-up regarding discharged patients.
- Directing and overseeing committees concerned with quality assurance, professional development, and integration of professional services, to ensure optimum quality of patient care.
- Directing other professionals in the medical treatment of mental and/or developmental disorders.
Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Maine; Board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology; and at least 5 years’ experience working with patients who have chronic and persistent mental illness.
Value of State’s share of Employee’s Retirement: 19.27% of pay

Level 1: 100% State Contribution = $461.75 biweekly (employee pays nothing)
Level 2: 95% State Contribution = $438.66 biweekly (Employee pays: 5%)
Level 3: 90% State Contribution = $415.58 biweekly (Employee pays: 10%)
Level 4: 85% State Contribution = $392.49 biweekly (Employee pays: 15%)
*The level of actual value of state paid Health Insurance will be based on employee’s wage rate and status with regard to the health credit premium program as of July 1, 2019.
