ANESTHESIA VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
MLAH is the premier critical care and referral center for Southern New Jersey and the surrounding areas serving the
South Jersey community since 1976. We provide compassionate and progressive
veterinary care for a wide range of companion and exotic pets. We feature
specialty care and additional services including cardiology, exotics, internal
medicine, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, surgery, acupuncture, and home
care.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The anesthesia veterinary
technician will provide comfort, diagnostic, surgical, and nursing care to
all patients. The responsibilities of the anesthesia technician
include, but are not limited to the following activities:

RESPONSIBILITIES
The anesthesia veterinary
technician will provide comfort, diagnostic, surgical, and nursing care to
all patients. The responsibilities of the anesthesia technician
include, but are not limited to the following activities:
- Partner with surgery specialists in
patient assessment, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures - Perform anesthetic monitoring including the
use of sevoflurane, injectable anesthesia, drug calculations, and the use
of a ventilator, intubation/ extubation of patients, setup and
troubleshooting of machines - Prepare various blood samples for diagnostic
testing - Accurately take multiple types of radiographs
throughout the pre and post operative process - Potentially scrub into 1+ hour surgeries to
assist doctors with surgical procedures including abdominal explores,
cruciate repairs, fracture repairs, thoracotomies, and both laparoscopic
and arthroscopic surgeries - Perform medical record keeping related to
procedures - Work collaboratively with Veterinarians and
Technicians to ensure a smooth workflow within the department - Provide training to other technicians in
anesthesia - Independently develop anesthetic protocols and
calculate and administer medications - Maintaining surgical equipment and provide
recommendations for improvements - Hospital wide anesthesia support as needed and at the discretion of the management
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum 1 year experience working with a
specialist veterinary surgeon or 3+ years working in general surgery and
anesthesia - CVT preferred
- Knowledge and advanced technical skills
including but not limited to: venipuncture, IV catheter placement, central
line placement, intubation, anesthesia, CPR procedures, chest tube and
tracheostomy maintenance, IV fluid administration, and ability to perform
advanced techniques such as epidurals and local blocks
TECHNICAL ABILITIES AND SKILLS
- Knowledge of normal patient vitals for awake,
sedated, and anesthetized patients - Accuracy in calculating and delivering
anesthetic agents, fluids, and CRIs - Comprehensive understanding and experience
with anesthetic monitoring is required - Ability to work in a highly collaborative
environment and commitment to building relationships with colleagues,
clients, and community is required - Knowledge and care with equipment maintenance,
cleaning, sterility, and troubleshooting; willingness to read equipment
manuals and consult with vendors if repair/upgrades needed - Knowledge of appropriate aseptic technique
and surgical procedures - Understanding of different surgical
procedures - Excellent communication and organizational
skills are required, and the ability to deliver exceptional client service
is expected - Must be able to regularly lift up to 50 pounds
(work requires lifting, carrying, and restraining animals-with assistance
from other staff for animals weighing over 50 pounds)
