About the service:

The Waikato Hospital Department of Critical Care is the largest single-site tertiary ICU in  New Zealand  that attends to all clinical specialties, from neurosurgery to cardiac surgery, plastic surgery and almost anything else imaginable.

About the role:

The Department employs one Fellow each year to help aspiring specialists bridge the gap between senior registrar and specialist.

Required skills & experience:

The Fellow will need to be registrable as a fellow of the Australasian College of Intensive Care Medicine, and will need to be able to be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand as a vocational trainee at least, but preferably with full vocational registration.

We have in the past accommodated specialists from related specialties (Emergency Medicine, Anaesthesia) where these applicants are exceptional, and where they are preparing to work in a rural or provincial centre in the future, with intensive care as an interest.

Depending on your level of experience you may form part of the specialist roster from the outset, or be folded into the senior roster in a supported way subsequently.

Why us:

The Waikato District Health Board (DHB) is one of the largest of 20 DHBs in New Zealand.

We plan, fund and provide health and disability support services to a population of more than 400,000. We run five hospitals across the district – a tertiary hospital in Hamilton, a secondary hospital in Thames, and three rural hospitals in Te Kuiti, Taumarunui, and Tokoroa.

Waikato Hospital in Hamilton is one of New Zealand’s largest tertiary, teaching hospitals with over 600 inpatient beds and 22 operating theatres. Clinical specialities include Women’s and Children Services, Cardiology / Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oncology and Haematology, Surgical services, and Mental Health and Addiction. Waikato Hospital is the Midland regional referral centre for multiple specialties including trauma surgery, oncology, and neurology.

We are a values based and inclusive organisation that is committed to deliver the best health outcomes for our total population. To do this we are working hard to develop a robust and capable workforce that reflects the population we serve. We strongly encourage applicants from all backgrounds with the necessary capability and who share our values to apply and would greatly value seeing more applicants from our Māori communities.

Why Waikato:

Waikato is the fourth largest region in New Zealand and located just south of Auckland. It features a wide range of world-class outdoor and cultural experiences. You can surf the world-famous beaches of Raglan, swim at the beautiful beaches of the Coromandel, hike our majestic mountain ranges, tour the Hobbiton shire, experience the magic of the Waitomo glowworm caves, and encounter a vast array of flora and fauna at the remarkable Maungatautari Ecological Reserve.

Situated on the banks of the mighty Waikato River, Hamilton is New Zealand’s largest metropolitan inland city. Hamilton’s vibrant city centre and rich cultural mix makes it an ideal place to experience the authentic friendly Kiwi lifestyle.
